I have never focused much on the front verandah at our beachhouse. I wanted furniture that could be delivered right way so I have very traditional white wicker (meh, but just as well since the house has white trim). The problem was I could only get lime green cushions and blue cushions. My seating is all lime, and my dining chairs and rocking chairs have blue. I find that wayyy too loud for my tastes and so I have kind of ignored it.

But two things got me thinking.

1) the pillows I had got moldy so they have to be thrown out, so I need throw pillows here.

2) I never put rugs down so maybe I can choose one that will tone it all down?

3) maybe curtains would also down the lime and blue?

Any ideas for a rug to deemphasize it all?

Trow pillows in a simple stripe to draw unity to the two colors. I don't think you need a rug or curtains at all. Less is more! You have a beautiful space with privacy. Being the front porch, how much do you actually use it vs. the back private, beachy spaces? I'd paint the ceiling blue, which is very traditional in New England and supposedly repels bees.

It's funny, I think of this as the front of the house, because it has a wide staircase and a large door in the center of the house. On the opposite of the house, is a standard sized door and two little steps to a back mudroom and the kitchen. I think of that as the back.

But, I am wrong. I just found this out a few months ago working on our carriage house plan. I kept assuming my setbacks were x, but that was because what i keep thinking of as "the front" of the house, is technically the back. The "front" is where it faces the road, not the ocean.

So, anyway, whatever side I should call it, this verandah faces our yard, pool and the ocean, and we use this a lot! Pretty much as long as it is not bad weather, someone is there.

It's so funny, when you said "paint the ceiling blue" I thought "but it is". Then I looked at my photo and it is not! I have done it here in our primary house, and it our old house ... plum forgot about it here!

IDK, even my DH, when I said I wanted to put down rugs, said "yes, i think it gives it more of a finished look". To which I could only raise an eyebrow and say "wow, you have really picked up a lot from HGTV".

OK, now it makes sense to add rugs and other accoutrements! Yes to a rug for sure, and maybe even curtains IF they serve a purpose, as in allowing you to spend more time outside if the weather is less than perfect! How about a hanging hammock or swing? Such a wonderful space!

What about Sunbrella Brannon Whisper stripe?

There's one other I'm thinking of that I'm trying to find as well. One moment, please...

MtnRdReDux, custom cushions and pillows are my business at Etsy. I was distressed to hear that your present pillows were moldy. This shouldn’t happen! When you get the next ones, make sure that they are made of certified outdoor rated foam, which is made of closed cell foam that resists water, mildew and mold. EZ-Dri is the brand that I use with my clients for all their outdoor upholstered furniture. It is more expensive than regular upholstery foam, (which I suspect yours were constructed from), yet definitely worth the additional cost if you don’t want to worry about mold again.

Yes to the haunt blue ceiling, and if you do go with a rug, make sure that that, too, is rated for outdoor use. I do think that new covers in a pattern would tone down that lime green that you’re not fond of. Perhaps one of these would work and help to tie in the existing lime green covers that you keep. They are all outdoor rated fabrics.

Hi Bonnie, Thanks! I dont really want more furniture; the side with the sofa is pretty full and on the side with the rockers there is actually this odd buffet-like piece I got at an antique store.

Spanish, I do love that,,,, if it works, it would really tone it down.

4H, They were outdoor pillows; no idea why they got moldy, but they were inexpensive and I dont like them much anyway. I like your fabrics but I dont see them toning it down as much as tieing them together. IYKWIM?

I think I should start with a rug, since that has less selection.

If you pm me your address, I can send you a swatch. I have a bunch of yardage to make pillows for our patio furniture.

omg, really, that is kind. Who carries it do you know?

I've found it on eBay and from a local seller in CA. Also, these guys might have it or be able to get it.

    How could I forget D&A!

JLC, I have Zanzibar, have had it for years! Just a small one as a bath mat, Love it. And I'm not sure but I think I have the second one, too, in the twin bedded guest room! The third one may be a little too toned down. But it made me realize. I do have a grey painted floor. Maybe bring in some grey?

SPanish, I think I have the info I need, but also I dont see how to PM you. : )

I was hoping you did because others seem to do it! I am a Luddite. Let me know if you want a sample and I'll figure out how to message in HOUZZ.

LOL, I think you have to be set up for it.

Now that JLC mentioned D&A, it occurs to me, the floor is grey, so I can do grey. I did a grey and white stripe rug on the back screened porch (with the flamingos). So maybe I should use the same rug here, and try to find pillows that have grey and lime and blue or that I can use with a solid grey pillow....

Okay, so thanks to JLC I found a rug that is grey and white, just like the one I have on screened porch. I like the idea of repeating it. Then I am pairing it with pillows that have blue, green and grey and white.

    Which do you like better?

    Thanks ... two more q....

Are there washable outdoor curtains? I keep seeing spot clean and dry clean?!

Is there such a things as an outdoor throw?

    # 2....love the striped fabric!

Pottery Barn has indoor/outdoor washable curtains online. I have a 20% off code for total purchase (ends tonight) if you're interested.

really, i was just on their site ,,, lemme look again ... and yes, thanks!

ETA - never mind, I just checked ... I need white, not natural. One of the white pairs say spot clean, the other white drapes are dry clean. So PB wont work

I found white washable from Ballard. I like the sheers, but for a reason I cant articulate I dont think they should be sheer; maybe the visual weight of the columns?

    Thoughts, anyone?

Sorry! I didn't notice they were natural, until I went back to look them up again.

I would prefer a heavier curtain. Have you looked at Wayfair?

Mtn, I have throw blankets in our screen porches both at home and at the beach. I don't think there are "outdoor" ones, but I just buy inexpensive cotton ones and throw them in the washer/dryer every so often. They seem to be just fine on the porch in general. Home Goods seems to always have a selection of cotton throws...maybe Overstock, too. We have some down comforter-type throws from Lands End that get used on the porch at the beach house too, when we're trying to stretch the season! We keep a stack of various throws folded in a stack in the laundry room for people to grab as needed.

I also like option 2 of your pillows above especially if you want to "tone down' the overall look.

Oh, I think D&A also has cotton throw blankets!

LOVE the second set of pillows/rug, with the octopus and starfish! (The first pillows are almost garish by comparison.)

Thanks all, I am going to order both sets and see. I need to bring grey from the floor and the rug up to the pillows, but I am not sure if I can just ignore the lime. That's why I was trying mixing the bright lime pillow with a grey pillow.

At the end of the day I think I wont know till i see the various shades of grey and green all in the same light!

Rather than throw pillows, I'd get some throws to toss over the furniture so there is something people can wrap around their shoulders or over knees if it's chilly. I think throw pillows are a nuisance!

Really like the direction you are going in. I like #2. As for washable sheers:

Do you plan on keeping the existing lighting? Would you add strings of lights or lanterns for decor, or is that too much?

The lights are actually old jars, but they look so small now that I'm focusing on them. I'm not sure about string lights, they seem to Boho for the setting much as I like them. We don't need fans, always a nice breeze.

people nap on that sofa so throw pillows are actually used.

The lights do appear to be a bit small for the space, but it's so hard to tell. Would you consider adding larger lights? Maybe over the 4th of July you'll string some bunting and lights for fun. Add throws and toss pillows for sure! What a beautiful space to decorate!
