Carpet or vinyl tile, or both?

So we have laminate flooring right now though out the living, dining, hall, kitchen and laundry room. It's starting to come up and needs replacing. We really want carpet in the living room and hall at least. But we can't decide if we want carpet in the dining room. We have 3 little kids so that just doesn't sound too appealing. We we're thinking of getting luxury vinyl tile in the kitchen, laundry and dining room. I have included a picture to give you an idea what we're thinking. The dining room flows into the kitchen (I was standing in the kitchen when I took the pic), you can see where the table is on the right side.. Please give me your honest opinions..would this look OK? Or should we do all carpet? I don't know if having half the house vinyl would look strange?

I'm going to be a dissenter. If I had young kids like you, I'd want to redo with all Luxury Vinyl Tile and then just put throw rugs down. The LVT just stays cleaner than any kind of carpeting. And if a kid gets sick? (Mine used to never seem to make it to the bathroom in time!)

You don't want it in your dining room for sure. Think of red wine being spilled on it, or some tomato soup or...

However to answer your question, no it won't look bad.

If it is in your budget, I would do LVT/LVP throughout the entire area. It's so nice to get area rugs where you might need them (living room, maybe dining room) rather than have permanent carpet that has to be professionally cleaned yearly(or more often if there is a spill). If you really do want wall to wall carpet in the living room that is fine, but definitely do not put it in the dining room!!! You will regret that so fast! I also wouldn't want carpet in the hall because it's such a high traffic area and will eventually show signs of wear. If you had a hard surface flooring like you have now, you can just get a runner.

Thank you for the replies! Honestly, I really don't like hard flooring. When we moved in here over 3 years ago, I've been complaining about the laminate the entire time ( I just hate hard floors especially barefoot). I love carpet..I know I'm in the minority but I love carpet in the living room. We have decided we will not be putting it in the dining room though, as much as I hate hard floors still think it's the best option for the dining room, especially with 3 kids! The carpet guy came over and said that would be the best place to stop the carpet (where I drew the line in the picture) if we don't want it in the dining room, since it's the natural break off point. There will be more LVT than carpet, the living room & hall isn't that big so I think I'll be able to enjoy the best of both worlds! =) I was a little worried it that might look funny, having 2 different floors in an open floor plan..but I like the cutoff look..if that makes sense.

Glad you made a decision! It sounds like it's the best choice for you. If you want something in the dining room you can get a rug and just clean it when something spills on it. :)
