Caleb, this is certainly NOT something I would practice as I enjoy the blooms too much. There are ways to encourage offset development without robbing yourself of the blooms. Search for the word "notching". What is your ultimate goal? bigger bulbs or offsets?

I actually did this to some of the bulbs I got from a Royal Colors order earlier this year. Red and Orange Rascal were trying to send up scapes but at great cost to the bulb which was already kind of small, so I cut them off hoping the bulbs will beef up and be less stressed for next year. I have done this before with my other ones and they do respond quite nicely.

That is a valid strategy to beef up the bulb more. Another is that you can enjoy the flower but don't let the plant expend energy and resources making seeds. When the flower is spent, just lop off the top of the scape. The green of the scape can still provide food and energy to the plant, so it's enough to cut off the dead flower part.

Sorry guys, I get blooms from my bulbs year after year. With ~500 bulbs, I am happy the way I am managing things. Caleb didn't provide details that he had accidentally knocked off a scape, or that the bulb was struggling, yet he suggested/thought maybe this approach would encourage offsets. Overall, the posting wasn't clear and I was just answering what I THOUGHT he was asking.
