Ludwig's Visit

Here are some photos of my trip to Ludwig's Roses in Phoenix. It's really cute and the people there are all very nice. As they talked about different varietals, they'd pick a bloom and hand it to me for me to inspect/smell. I had a small bouquet when I left. :-) Ludwig's nursery is situated on a small section of a city block that is going to be completely relandscaped with other nurserys/gardens: cactus, native, tree, perennials, etc.

The name Ludwig's Roses is written in the concrete walk with little pebbles - you can barely see it in the walkway in this photo.

This is actually a really cute container space that's decorated (inside and out) and has the cash register and some rose oriented goodies inside:

On three sides on the edge of the nursery they've planted a wide variety of roses with a covered pathway. The bushes are mostly young, but as it matures it should be really nice:

As you can see in the background above, it's mixed use in this area of old Phoenix with residential and commercial. There are cute hand printed signs over most of the varieties. Don't tell my husband, but that's back of him in the shot below:

And, here's a Sherbet bloom:

Beautiful, terrific blooming pinks on sale for Mother's Day:

And, a close up of Miranda Lambert with St. Patrick along side - which, by the way, I finally got!!!

More to follow...

I fell in love with Roberto Capucci:

So much so, I now have two of my own RC. :-)

There's a cute shaded area to sit down under. That's fake grass, but it totally works in this application. Also, beyond the line of roses you can see the tables for the cactus when they arrive. From what I understand the other plants will be with a separate vendor.

All in all, I was only there for 2 hours and 20 minutes. :-)

Looks like a nice place. I'd love to go! Nice picture of SHERBET. I thought about ordering it. Your pic looks better than the ones I've seen on their websites. So what did you buy?

Thanks for the great photos, towanda. Ludwigs looks like a place where the rose is the most important thing. I've fallen in love again with Roberto--thought I'd conquered my feelings (ha) because I have no room for him. What a beautiful rose. You are so lucky. Diane

Thank you for the images. We were going to drive to Ludwigs a couple of weekends ago, but something arose. In addition, I really did not know what to expect, so going along with other plans became easy. Now I know it will be worth the drive.

The nursery is set up to be 'transplanted'. The value of this land is $6M and it's been sitting vacant for years. If it sells, the nurseries and other projects are supposed to be able to just kinda pack up and go. The space is huge and I hope they decide to make part of it a parking area!

    Mcnastarana – I totally agree.

Beth, I picked up two Roberto Capucci, St. Patrick, Belle
Rouge, Bella di Todi and a Calm Composure which isn’t in HMF, but it’s similar
to RC, but a paler pink with a moderate fragrance. Sherbet definitely caught my
eye. I didn’t get one because I have quite a lot of mid-range pinks. You should
    order it!

Diane, are you SURE you don’t have room for one more little o’rose
    bush?

Lynn, something “a-rose?” Lol I thought that
was cute. If there are specific roses you’re interested in, I’d call first and
I also think they could ship to you since that’s a drive for sure unless you
have other fun things to do in PHX.

Moroseaz, interesting. That makes sense with the way the
nursery is set up. I don’t know PHX land values, but it’s too bad it can’t
remain sort of a plant co-op maybe even with the City’s help (parks and
rec/some kind of grant) and become part co-op, part parking, part park. You
must live or work around there to be interested in parking. :-) We had dinner
at Hulu’s just up the street from Ludwig’s the night before and it was really
    good food.

Thanks everyone for taking part in the "field trip."

Thanks for posting this Towan. Love the pictures and have been debating on Roberto C for a couple of years now. If two of my Austins don't make it because of the heat, I will be getting him. If he is anything like the other Barni roses, they are just the best!

I love St. Patrick with Miranda Lambert. Mine's with Tournament of Roses --- ho hum.

I envy you your Roberto Capucci. Hope this nursery is a huge success.
