Whenever I think of gardeners and their eternal optimism, and the ability to start over fresh every year (and sometimes every month) with great plans and great expectations, I can't help but think of Paul Harvey's famous speech (used in a recent Super Bowl ad, which introduced the speech to a whole new generation) "So God Made A Farmer".

Aren't gardeners just as optimistic and hardworking as farmers? Aren't ranchers the same? Don't we all get knocked down by Mother Nature time and again and yet we get up swinging and planning and fixing things and trying to overcome all the challenges? And, don't we all carry with us that same eternal optimism that no matter what bad things happen this year, surely next year will be better?

I always say that if gardening was easy, everyone would be a gardener. And, inside every single gardener I know, whether they are raising flowers or fruits or veggies or herbs or all the above, there is a bit of the American Farmer. That's the legacy we carry on our shoulders every day of every year.

Sometimes, when the chickens aren't laying or the turkey hens all have disappeared into the woods to set on their eggs and to (hopefully) eventually return home with their chicks, or when the pests or diseases are hitting the garden, or drought rears its ugly head, or the coons get every single ear of corn before it matures....and I feel discouraged....I go read "So God Made A Farmer" to remind me of our long heritage of good people raising good food, and it reminds me that what matters most is simply to continue to carry on despite all the challenges. And, reading it makes me miss Paul Harvey's voice, and I'm sure if someone wants to hear him, they can find it on YouTube.
