IME, albas can be tough. There are roses that have some small roots along the suckering root, but albas don't seem to do that. If the plant is large, I think I'd try for an outer piece of the crown instead of a distant sucker. Something that definitely has roots. It is going to be more disruptive to the mother plant, but not life-threatening.

What I have as Blush Hip is more like a Gallica as far as suckering and runners go. It is the only Alba I have that could be called invasive. Not at all a typical Alba. Of course, maybe it is misidentified. But if your Blush Hip is suckering I suspect we have the same thing. Very easy for me to start from suckers, and fig insanity's method sounds great.

I am forever pulling up runners from the native Rosa californica to put in my new roses. I have several designated areas where I allow them (the R. californica) to run free and be themselves. These runners go for miles it seems some sections 10 feet before popping up a new rose plant. Are the Albas tht aggressive? I have several but they are young and now that I am digging up everything and sticking them in sunken 10-15 gallon squat pots it will probably not be an issue until the pots are clogged with rose.

My Blush Hip has never suckered, I've had it 8 or 9 years.

Try severing the sucker while it is still in the ground without digging it up. Then dig it up later after it has had a chance to root in place.
