Potting mixes are specifically formulated so that they drain in an artificial environment -- containers.

Personal homemade mixes are guesses. Only way you'll know it might work is try it.

Generally, it is recommended that garden soil or topsoil never be included in a container soil mix. It lacks the fast drainage and porosity that is a key factor in successful container growing. Even compost shroud be used very sparingly as it too will compromise good drainage and will break down and compact over time.
