Popcorn ceilings

Just a question for everyone.... Are popcorn ceilings making a come back?!!? My brother just bought a brand new house in Alberta and it has popcorn ceiling throughout. I have a friend in Winnipeg who built her house and she has popcorn ceilings too! I was shocked because I have a 30 year old home with popcorn ceilings which was they style back then. I have not seen popcorn ceiling in new homes until now, so are they in style again??? I can't say I am a huge fan of them.

I just remodeled my 1977 home, I left the popcorn ceilings. I really do not see anything wrong with them! I don't need some dumb decorator telling me what to do with my house.

No, they are definitely not. There are tons of posts on Houzz with people begging for ways to get rid of them. Smooth, untextured ceilings are in style at the moment, and I'm hoping it stays that way!

I agree with feeny.. nope, they are definitely not. Popcorn ceilings are a less expensive method of doing a ceiling which is probably why you still see some builders using them.

some goes for Europe - not wanted. We have a ghastly wall covering called crepie which is like a milder form of stucco painted on the inside walls (or popcorn on the walls) - fortunes are being made by plasterers getting rid of them

Yep! Not making a fortune, but getting rid of any textured wall or ceiling is becoming part of most projects for us.

It's not the decorators to be concerned about so much as future buyers (who may be concerned about the asbestos content of pre-1978 popcorn ceilings as well as the out of date style). But if you like the look, by all means embrace it, as the stuff is a PITA to remove.
