They may be getting slightly different amounts of sun or moisture that effect how quickly the soil warms. Give it a couple of weeks more. If you have voles, I do find that they are usually the guilty party when a clem disappears over the winter, but now I plant in wire mesh circles to discourage them.

It took my Nelly more than a year to get going. I had almost given up. Now 3 years in and it blooms profusely.

thank you! That makes me feel better..I hope it will show some growth soon. Ill be patient. It seems like a little growth is trying to peek through but on the other side of my light pole, my other Nelly Moster Clamatis that I bought at the same time is thriving..its almost 2 ft tall!

I have discovered that some clematis are very reluctant to grow. Not any particular variety, but just the plant itself. In 2012 I planted a Vyvan Pennell and, like most first year plants didn't do much but did stay healty. In 2013 it showed no signs of growth but the roots appeared, with very careful removal of the top layer of soil, to be firm and fleshy with crown intact. I kept it moist and waited. In 2014, still no growth, but roots and crowns still looking ok. After googling a bit, I have read that sometimes the clematis can be very reluctant to grow. In fact someone here I believe stated that they had a clematis that did not grow at all for 5 years after planting and suddenly it sprouted and did just fine! Well, my Vyvan still, in 2016, has done nothing, but again, the roots are turgid and the crown is intact. I dug it out and potted it and will try to get it to sprout under these micro conditions. So, sometimes clematis can be very tempermental. Just have patience and give it time.

My new Clematis has blooms on the one side...The other Clematis plant still doesn't have any growth at all but maybe next year. They were planted at the same time and they are right across from each other...

Remove all the grass inside the fenced area. Apply some alfalfa pellets, some cow manure and some milorganite into the bare soil. Mix it well into the soil and mulch it with some mulch. You can also add some perennials at the base to give some shade to the roots of the clematis. Guaranteed growth will occur. I have seen it happen.

Cindy, when you planted the clematis, did you dig a large,wide hole and fill with compost/good draining soil? I wonder if the grass choked the clematis? Has it poked thru the grass yet?

Where there is life, there is hope! :) Mine was tiny when I planted it and last year when it came up after winter. If it's resilient, all you need to do is keep watering/mulching/feeding it. I was told chicken manure was really good for them. I bought some (dont laugh) coop poop that comes in granules in a bag. :o) Keep me posted...I would love to watch yours grow (post pics! :o)) The one that has 5 blossoms is looking great! I had one lone blossom this year on my Nelly, but it was worth the wait. It's also taking off (growing big time) this spring! Gotta get a bigger/higher trellis!

Clematis seem to have their own personality. I have some that just flat out do not like sun. They just curl up and act like they're gonna die - so I moved them to shady areas and they perked right up. I usually check Taylor's Clematis in Britain to check out the real deal on what grows in shade and sun. There's a lot that grow well in shade and Nelly Moser grows in shade. Montana Elizabeth is another one. If you look it up on general websites for sale in the u.s. they all say full sun. Poor plants. Plants have their own personality which is why we're all so addicted to gardening in the first place - they're so fascinating - except when we can't figure out what they're doing. Then it's just frustrating. I hope everything works for you and they grow better. I've had to had Feng Shui people come out and work on my land because of land issues - it did help a lot with plants growing. But that one clematis it just has its own thing going on.
