I pinched the ends of mine in order to re shape it during the growing season. I personally would wait till the plant is dormant to do any real pruning. I am a noob to figs and by no means an authority Im just sharing what ive learned from the members on here.

Ok 2nd noob question: how old would you say this tree is and the tag said ficus carica Sierra, I assume that is the Latin species genus and Sierra is the strain?

From one noob to another......id say that tree is probably 2-3 years old. I have a 2 year old Sicilian white fig in a pot that looks to be similar in size. There are so many variables though, was it fed regularly, watered, etc. My best guess is a minimum of 2 years though. I pinched the ends of mine in order to force more side growth and the results were quick. Within a few days I saw new buds popping out of the sides. Sierra is the variety of fig....if it's accurate. Sierra produces a white fig.

Pruning should be done while dormant; however, you can do it at anytime so long as you understand the consequences:

1. You reset fig production likely another year.

2. You must protect the new green growth more from sun and cold. That means more watering and/or shade cloth in your TX summer heat and bringing it in sooner in winter.

Rooting fig cuttings is easy, so don't toss the "trimmings."
