Virginia bluebells

Just collected a few mertensia seeds from a stand growing nearby, can I stratify these in the fridge immediately and plant them let's say in July, then try to overwinter them as seedlings?

or should I store them dry until this coming winter and then stratify them to grow early spring 2017?

thanks

ps- do they really need stratification or will they sprout immediately, I read different things online...
