Backyard peeking thru the bird-feeding area at the pergola.I have potted roses at all 4 coulumns, with two climbers at each one.

More pot areas... quite a few in the enclosed pen area where my son's ex-girlfriend's dog and our dog used to stay. Her dog would jump the fence and run the neighborhood, so we had to build that fortress to keep his stupid-butt in. So glad she went back home to SoCal with the dog... Now it's our veggie pen and potted rose area.

Side front area that is overrun with weeds, foxtail grass,Bermudagrass and various squirrel-planted oak and walnut trees...

Here is one of the worst "weeds" I have...Centranthus ruber... Started with one or two small plants. It's now overrunning at least half of my side yard.. I hate it as much as the Bermudagrass...

Tree removal. Shudder. Our septic tank had to be ??? when I was a child. I had no idea that huge thing was under the lawn. Country living's a lot of work.

Wow! I love seeing everyone's yards and gardens. Girl if you wanna see weeds stroll on over here to N Georgia. Lol. How you maintain all those pots is so very impressive. I can barely keep up my 20 or so pots. Lol. Your roses look beautiful!!! Judy

I let some weeds grow about 7 ft tall on the back of our property last year. I was gonna cut them but noticed they were completely full of Zebra Longwing butterflies nectaring all over them. Like hundreds- everywhere! So the weeds stayed. No one can see them from the street where I live anyways but if I could get away with it, I probably would have left them for the butterflies even if they could be seen.

Wanna-gong-fu who? lol I like that guy... I just love your garden. It's so lush compared to the high desert. It looks like everything is very happy there.

It's fascinating that you're able to grow all those beautiful blooms in pots in such a shady area. I would have thought you would have had deer all over the place!

I started in roses four years ago with pots on our deck. They didn't do so well because of shade from a humongous spruce tree and, with all the rain we get here on the Oregon coast. The pots couldn't always get rid of the water over the winter. Lost a few to wet feet. Plus deer would just come up on the deck and have themselves an "All you can eat buffet." Didn't matter that we would yell at them through the windows. If we went out on the deck, they would grudgingly move off.

Solved that last year with a fenced-in garden in a sunnier part behind our shed. They seem to have made the transition OK. No more deer problems. No more wet feet. I do have two in pots, but with just two I think I can solve the almost constant winter rain problem.

Yeah Irisgal, the septic tank takes up quite a lot of space. I dunno how they get the base ground so perfectly level. It's a real art of a sort to be able to put the system together. Luckily we were fortunate enough to be able to have the concrete type. Many people have to go with the newer fiberglass ones, and often have to have the electronic pumps due to the terrain or lack of room for new leach lines. And our leach lines had to go zig-zag down below where the veggie pen is. I think it was like 110 linear feet total. So we were pretty lucky.

Al, I'm not sure which potted roses you're referring to, but if they look like they're in shade, it's because the sun was heading down. I took these shots somewhere around 7:30 or so and it was beginning to get dusk. On my property the sun goes in and out all day long in many areas. The houses across the street have tall pine trees too that the sun passes in and out of. As for the deer... I used to have a huge problem with them in yrs past. The last couple of yrs they only seem to be hitting the front section. I think it's because of the dog/veggie pen. It blocks their entrance to the side yard.

Barbara, we hear birds out there all day long. It's so cool. The loudest ones are the jays and the woodpeckers. I love it!

Really enjoyable to see the whole of your spread. It's all so informal and homey, yet just a little bit exotic ... the NorCal vibe all over! Now I feel better about not having a perfectly groomed property ;)

Oh believe me Sylvia, my yard will never be perfectly groomed... ever! Especially when I have a husband who can't put anything away. And is such a packrat! Plus we have so many vehicles all over, and a garage that holds ONE! He collects cars, but we have no money to fix them up. I told him our property looks like Sanford & Son's!

Thanks for the look and the comments. I am just curious about how you care for the roses in pots over winter. I would guess that you would have to do something to protect them. As for deer, I have my problems with them also, and I am right in the middle of town.
