Frank, you are so funny. I normally wait until after my first blooming season to do the grafts, but I want them to have longer time to grow and strong for the winter. I had to sacrifice all the available branches for grafts. I still have more but Houston weather is not good, it is raining almost everyday.

Many of my grafts scions from last year slowly bloom already.

I like these pots because they have big and strong branches. I will visit Houston Garden Center more often and watch out for 1/2 price adenium.

On the topic of pruning, has anyone else just pulled out the smallest leaf and just barely scratched up the growing tip on a young adenium instead of normal pinching?

I ask because I did this and pretty much all of my seedlings branched but also kept growing from the original stem like nothing happened.

Question to Marie and others....when a scion is attached to the under-stock, do you coat the top, cut surface of the scion, with wax, or any other kind of sealer- to prevent the scion from drying out? I know that the clear tape holds the scion in place, but that tape is eventually removed, leaving the scion exposed, possibly drying out before grafting takes place.

Frank, I don't coat with anything straight cut and apply.

I can tell by looking at top scion after about a week, if the top is still fresh, I know it is most likely takes, if it turns black or wet, it is probably not going to take.

About grafts, I want to emphasis few most important points.

1- Keep the pots about to be graft on the dry side.

2- Do it on a sunny day and make sure it is no rain in the next few days.

3- Soak razor blades in alcohol every 2-3 cuts. Dry it with paper towel.

4- Hold off water for at least next 5 days.

I had 2 tiny bowls of alcohol, after 2-3 cuts, I drop the razor blade in one, pick up the other one dry/use it. Let the first one soak until I need it. (1-2 minutes).

I replaced the alcohol in the bowls about half way of my grafting.

I know some will not make it thru the winter, but if 50% survive I am happy.

Did you do all flat grafts? I was hoping to do V grafts with two or three scions.

Marica, yes I did all of that and it took only about 2 hours. Flat is very easy and fast, you don't use a lot of scions and it heals better.

How long do you wait before removing the plastic and putting them in the sun?

Spacecoastfl, I wait about 12 days before take the plastic off, and until they have few leaves before full sun.

i just grafted a Black Widow and a white on the same plant yesterday.. This is my 3rd attempt. we shall see.
