Pubicalyx Project

Wanted to share a picture of my pubicalyx project I'm doing. As you all know, pubicalyx is my favorite no matter how "old news" this cultivar may be. I just love it so much.

In this pot I have 4 cuttings, Pubicalyx Splash. Pub. Red Buttons from SRQhoyas.com. Pub. RHP. And Pub. Black Dragon.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! All the cuttings are sprouting roots and I can't wait until this plant is mature and blooming all sorts of different flowers. Maybe not at the same time, but still, the surprises to come will be well worth it not to mention all the pretty leaves. :)

Very nice. I love community pots. Mine has carnosa clones in it. Your flowers will be a wild color show !

    Lovely!

Thank you guys! I'm really excited to see where this goes! I'm not very satisfied with the rate at which the roots formed (took about 2 weeks). I have another batch of different kinds of pubicalyx coming and I'm going to try Dip N' Grow rooting gel/liquid. Both because you can set the ppm ratio, and it contains alcohol which is supposed to aid in absorbtion. Has anyone tried it before?

I have not, but keep us posted. I have been using Schultz brand powdered hormone, but am looking to try something else once I use this stuff up.

Looks very nice. Yes, please keep us posted with pictures. I know exactly what you mean about H. Pubicalyx, I feel the same way about Carnosas.

New pubicalyx community pots I put together this week. Phillipine Black, No ID, and HSI 037. Any ideas on the no ID? Thinking maybe Pink Silver...
And another. Phillipine Black in this one, as well as another No ID from the same mother plant. Seeing room for one more cutting in there... Hoping to find someone with RHP cuttings!

Just for the heck of it, Red Buttons I got from Susan! The top left leaf has this weird silver blotch on it... That isn't scale is it? The smaller leaf below it has it was well.

Take a close up picture of the weird leaf please, just in case.... but as far as I can tell it just has a weird blotch of silver splash. Those leaves are gorgeous and I wish I hadn't seen them. That is one of few, and maybe the only of the better known pubicalyx I tell myself I don't want....

I lost this post and couldn't find it for a couple days lol! Here is a close up of a couple of leaves that have this weird silverness... I tried to gently scrape some of it off with my fingernail and it seems to be a part of the leaf, not something growing on top if that helps! Thanks

That's just a touch of sunburn.

    Scale looks like this:

*color and pattern of scale varies*

    Aphids:

    Other common hoya issues:

    Sunburn:

(hoya sp. Sarawak...one leaf not covered enough during hardening off)

    (hoya imperialis, same as above)

    Mechanical damage:

    (punctures caused by kitty teeth)

(leaf smashed between pots, linear damage)

Next we have bacterial and viral infections:

    Viruses:

Hoya calycina infected with Capsicum Chlorosis Virus:

Impatiens Necrotic Spot virused Hoya carnosa tricolor:

    (photocredit invasive.org)

Also, please refrain from buying Hoya imperialis 'Mosaic'. It is thought to be virused, and while the virus does not seem to affect the imperialis plant, it could negatively infect other plants, not just hoyas.

    Bacterial issues:

Root rot (leaf - bottom node, first sign, for me):

Hoya sp. LP-4 (EPC 376)...errantly left outside during rainy weather...thank goodness ot was a cutting and not the mother plant!

    Roots (frail, frayed, ugly):

    Compare to healthy roots:

    hoya coriacea semi-hydro

    hoya halconensis semi-hydro

    hoya campanulata semi-hydro

    Powdery mildew:

I know this is a lot of info to absorb, but I hope it helps!

Keep in mind, sometimes it is not a fungus, bacteria, or virus, just a normally abnormal variant. That being said, any leaf with a ring pattern needs to be closely watched! Any leaf turning black should be removed. Any leaf with obvious fungus or mildew should be removed. If the bottom two leaves look yellow or black near the petioles, check your roots! If a stem is mushy, check your roots (unless it is not the main stem).
