Need Rhodo Advise

Hi there, I am a first time home owner as of two weeks ago, and I am totally new to gardening...so I think I might need a lot of help from you kind folk. I liked to think I have a green thumb with house plants, and love learning about plants, so I am eager to learn the ropes.

But this plant, to me, is not looking good in front of my house...wild in the woods is one thing, but it seems to almost reach out at passerby...and larger than all the other plants in the yard.

My friend said that the cold Michigan spring thus far has caused some damage, and I can expect flowers soon.

My main issue is the size of this plant and all that empty space in there, of branches. I know I have the option of pruning all that lower stuff off, but then the plant is still too tall.

It also gets very little shade and from what I read these babies like at least some shade.

Would it be a huge deal to dig this out? It looks massive.

And how do I donate?
