Problem with kiwi Arctic beauty

last modified: 10 years ago

I planted a kiwi Arctic beauty four years ago, and it has grown well imo, reaching the top of an 11' arbor last year. This year I noticed the bark falling off in chunks near the base of the two main 'trunks', as the pictures below hopefully show. Beneath where the bark was, there is a paper thin, light brown layer that scores easily and shows green underneath. It is the only one of its kind here, so no fruit though it has a healthy flowering every year including this year.

In essence it seems the picture of health except for the loss of bark. Pest? Does this normally lose its bark? Please let me know what you think.

(Well, pictures won't load. Will post this then go back in and try to add.)
