kitchen counter top dilemma

I'm thinking about the acrylic counter tops (much like

Cesarstone) from Ikea. Am told they are strong, can be

sanded and are used in commercial kitchens.

They are about 1/3 less than quartz.

Any opinions re: above?

In my area, I've found acrylic tops (Corion and similar) to be very close in price to the quartz products like Caesarstone. They can be sanded but you need to be okay with the scratches between sanding / refinishing jobs. And the cost of refinishing in my area is $200 first hour & $100 every hour after.

Acrylic countertops are not as trendy or as high end as Quartz, but they are good countertops (provided you do not get the built in acrylic sinks). I would encourage you to shop around. In my area, IKEA charges more for acrylic (solid surface) countertops and has less selection than others places do.

I agree with smit. You can take advantage of acrylic's workability by using more interesting shapes and profiles than those available for quartz or stone. Corian actually has a competition for innovation and some have even made furniture out of it.

as someone said, just dont do the sink in that material. my light colored one stained from many 'normal' food items (cranberry juice, used tea bag) and got cracks around the drain from boiling water, as in pouring off pasta.
