If your intent is to tone down the red floors, stay away from anything with green undertones. Green complements red and amplifies it.

Such a great space already. Love your floors. Try to find a rug and chairs at the same time. I would do neutral chairs and a patterned rug. Easier to change if you get tired of the rug. I am of the mindset that furniture should be neutral,gray,green beige, brown, black etc. and pop it with pillows. You will never tire of that and furniture is a big investment. For drama, I would take down the two small prints in the dining room and get drapes to frame the window hanging them close to the ceiling and a bit wider, something with a pattern. I hate to say it but I don't like the mirror over that piece, I would take it down and put it in the dining room behind the table on the back wall, although I am not sure how big it really is. I would take the art piece that is hung in the LR and put it over the piece by the mirror.

I think this dining chair would be right at home in your space. Simple, unobtrusive and classic.



For blinds, consider the top up/bottom down shades. They're contemporary looking, great for privacy and for light control. You can always layer panels over them if you choose.

You have made a good start. Agree that the mirror would be better reflecting the chandy at the dining table, but the chandy is a bit too small. With a glass table, I think you can go stonger with the chandy size because it hangs above a void, so to speak. I'd prefer the two prints behind the sofa. Here is a chaise for the window area and some chair thoughts, although you may decide to move away from any green, I think a large rug could minimize the red floor, and I love greens. I would go for all green and then use another color for accent; for me maybe orange but the right blue could look great too!

One note - can't tell how walls relate to couch color - it may be bringing out the green in your sofa tone. Autumn tones usually work well with green, but green and revere pewter don't connect well. If you used orange to echo the floor instead of red, then orange and gray play well. But before you pick a rug to go with walls, you should really pick it because you LOVE it and it goes well with your sofa. It can set the whole palette for the room, so it ought to be something you crave.

Finding the right pair of chairs should follow the rug. I recommend you stick with timeless oriental or arts and crafts patterns - they work in the most modern rooms well and hide every sin. You can always put a plain sisal indoor / outdoor rug under the dining table.

Leave the romans until you make the other things sing - they are expensive, neutral and will work until you are ready to tackle with $.

Can you hang the two prints vertically in the foyer or where you move the large picture? I think we meant the wall to the right of the bay window. Let curtains do the job on that back wall with window. Thinking bird's egg blue, so that might work. Don't care for runners, but how about a large floral arrangement?

Now that I look at that, it won't work because the mirror is a brushed silver finish and the chandy has a chrome finish - I still like the idea of a mirror on that dining area wall, so maybe one in a different finish, then the round one could go in the foyer - or is that mirror overkill? It could also find a home in a different room. I do love the color combo of the green and bird's egg blue. Thank you!

michellepj i pulled the cinnamon from your accent pillows, but understand that aqua might be more of your fave as the first accent tone. Can you describe the color of your couch? is it a greenish gold kind of neutral? camel / khaki leaning gold?

Hi libradesigneye.....the couch is a muted mossy green. The pillows were something I found during the holiday season (for our housewarming party) when I needed to add a little color to our halfway done house. I do like pops of a brighter color, but more muted and neutral throughout.

I would put the round mirror above the couch where it can reflect light from the windows that are across from it. Maybe center the mirror and put some art on each side. Love the furniture but need a rug to pull all the colors together.

I thought you should try the mirror where the large print is. Basically you are flip flopping the large print for the mirror as I agree the mirror has a silver finish and would not work with the dining room fixture.

update...removed mirror and moved art to above bar. With this change I can see adding a few more orange details. Now what to do with the completely empty wall. Would love to have some kind of storage, but will settle for a console table. Ideas?

I like the art there now instead of the mirror. Do you? The lights really highlight the beautiful colors in it. Raise the picture a bit to align with the door frame. Picky I know but it will make a visual difference. Now that I see the picture, I love the idea of whoever said orange and blue. I was thinking robin's egg blue and now that I see it, I agree. I would work the color off that picture. Leave the other wall blank for now and focus on a rug and new chairs. Not every wall has to have something on it.

Now that I see it again I would focus on cleaning up the glass bar area. I would buy nice colored glasses to pick up the picture colors and remove the stuff on the top. Maybe a silver tray. Definately go for orange and blue with a hint of red. Your pillows are now washed out by the strong colors of the picture. That picture is a good inspiration. Can't wait to see what you do next.

I do really like it, tennisanyone!! I love how it brings together the colors that we're talking about. I'll get my husband to raise it just a touch some time this week. I do have a round silver tray on top - I'll clear it off.

Ordering the rug soon, so now I will be looking for art for over the couch, chairs, fabric for panels for the dining room window, pillows to bring in the accent colors.

At the entry, I would want - a long bench that could be pulled around into the conversation square for a crowd - long term a place to stop and take your shoes / boots / etc. off. Really versatile - That can always go under the windows in the alcove behind the chairs or pulled up to the end of the dining table when the big crowd shows up. Beautiful so far! I am biased but there truly is something about original art. Have you visited your local art galleries? Do you know the style of art you love? Here are 2 examples by Colorado artist Peggy McGivern: beautiful subtle colors, representational but contemporary. "Welcoming Committee" and "Buffalo in the PInes". Many artists will do commissions so you can choose the perfect size.

Love the ikat and striped fabrics libra! Could do some pillows (I've got some sewing skills, just need to refresh), and the idea of a bench is nice. We don't use the room much as we do most of our living in our den, but extra seating is always good. We lack storage, so I'm thinking about trying to do some sort of low cabinet that has storage under the window in the alcove.

I do quite a bit of nature photography and have made our hallway into a gallery of sorts. I don't want to overdo our house with my prints, but I could look into doing a sepia or black and white series of shots that would work in a grouping. Great idea!

I've made some progress! The chevron rug is on it's way, the art has been raised a bit, and I may have found the art for over the couch.....opinions?

michelle, why wouldn't you just have one of your own photos enlarged and put on a wrapped canvas for over your couch? If you do photography, it just seems like a natural thing to do...:)

why not put your photos in two of these oversized frames an keep it simple....

Our hallway is a "gallery" that is filled with my photos, I'll be putting two of my own into the bathroom, and I'm thinking of doing a grouping of them on the other blank wall in the living room (photo attached), so I'd like to leave a few walls to other artists :)

I see the aqua tones in the rug and I like that a lot. Not sure the art has enough mossy green and/or aqua for me to help tie it together but it is art - if you love it, then it will be great.

I believe you are off to a great start, and your furnishings are beautiful. I would suggest you get a large over-the-sofa piece of wall art to hang above the sofa. If you can find a picture or print that harmonizes with the pictures in the dining area, that would be great. I would suggest a silver grey and off-white leaf or vine-patterned area rug to give softness and warmth to the room. The silver grey and off-white will tone down the red in the floor.
