Leaf propagation questions

last modified: 10 years ago

I have a leaf I am trying to propagate, and have never been successful with this before. I got the leaf about 3 weeks ago, dipped it in some rooting hormone (not even sure this stuff does any good, but using up the jar anyways), and I potted it in a 2" pot and stuck it in a plastic food container for a humidity dome. I also cut the leaf at the top, and angled the cut along the petiole before planting.

The leaf was a younger, healthy one. It has clearly grown roots under the grow light all my plants start out under. I watered it just the other day as it was a bit dry.

Am I doing this right, and is there anything I have done wrong or could be doing better? Or do I just need more patience?

I am still new to AV's, but have gotten handy with rooting tiny suckers, watering, and getting piles of blooms, just have not gotten leaf cuttings down. Once I do... going to get a couple mySensation leaves.

Hey Kim! Good growing!!!! Yep you did it right, but now let me introduce you to my friend,,,,,,Miss Patience! Listen to her and one day when you least expect it you will see little babies! But for now,,,,Miss Patience is your best friend whether you like it or not!!!! Rosie

    Hey Rosie,

Miss Patience may be your friend but I only tolerate her 'cause I have to. I find waiting exceedingly frustrating.

I know Leon,,,,,me too. But you know, a watched pot never boils!!!!! I just ignore them and go on to something else. Frustrated??? You bet, I am with ya on that,,,,but nontheless,,,,,she will prevail! Rosie

Awwww, so you guys mean to tell me I can't just go to the store and buy this "patience" stuff? ;-)

Hahahahah, ok fine. If I can wait around to try growing succulents from seed, I can handle this. Probably. In the meanwhile will focus my attention on my outdoor plants and figuring out which of my many plants I want to repot this season and which to wait. Only have one AV on that list, others are good. The rest of my jungle however... will certainly help me forget about Miss Patience for a bit, lol.

The only succulent I know comes in an ice cream dish and if its chocolate I love it.

Awwwww, I just love chocolate ice cream!!!!!!! Rosie

    Meijers' "Death by Chocolote" ....

    You gotta try it !

Well Leon, I would rather just have basic plain old chocolate ice cream. That way I will not experience "DEATH by Chocolate" and will live long enough to take care of my violets! lol

I get paid in craft beer and icecream to watch my nephew by his mama and dad. They don't actually need to, but don't tell them. The other day they brought me this sam's club stuff chock full of salted caramel sauce and ohmygosh.... so good.

Maybe I should feed Miss Patience some icecream, has anyone ever tried using it to stimulate African violet growth? Sure stimulates mine!

hahahahahaha! But seriously,,,,,you can use dilute leftover beer to water your plants!!!! I have done it! Doesn't hurt a thing, AND I hear it is good for plants occasionally!!!!

Ice Cream??? Maybe not so much. Rosie

Especially outside, beer feeds the bacteria... Inside... are you sure you have enough beer guzzling bacteria in your pots?

Really? Hmmm. I may have to try that.

Remember,,,,I said dilute. And I meant veeeeeeeery dilute! I am just giving them a taste, not throwing a plant party! lol And realistically, these guys rarely leave enough beer to be concerned about!!!! hahahaha Rosie

Well, Miss Patience has decided to make an appearance, I took a peek at my little leaf cutting this eveing, and found two tiny new leaves peeking out of the soil. Hurray!

I remember all the times as a younger person I would try growing these, only to sadly bring a mostly dead and sometimes crispy plant to my mom to salvage. Have come such a long way since then.

    YAAAAAAAAY for you Kim!!!!! Rosie

The new leaves seem a bit pale, is this normal or perhaps a sign of some nutrient defficiency?

Is the mother leaf variegated ? If it is then pale is normal.

    Nope, solid green.
