Annabelle originates from woody areas so dappled sun is usually best but they will also do well in morning sun & afternoon shade. It also does well in full sun provided your sun is not as harsh and strong as it is down here.

Sometimes you have to try here and there so feel free to experiment. But morning sun and afternoon shade sounds good. In locations where you ae not sure, just check it once a week while experimenting, especially in the middle of the summer.

I don't have any trees so my shade comes from building and fences. I have livein Texas and it sure can get hot. Ky is a little cooler but can be hot and humid.

All hydrangea arborescens should be treated the same way. If you find something that works for one it should apply to all of that species.

.... And that's for hydrangea arborescens only. Macrophyllas/serratas are mostly morning sun, Quercifolia half-sun, Paniculatas are all-day sun.

I am going to have to look up Quercifolia. The Paniculatas love it in my yard.
