I finally am getting started in garden.....

so i did a bit of gardening yesterday....using the slow tortoise in a coma method LOL....that is how i felt.this stupid fibromyalgia thing i have now makes me even stiffer than just being 61 makes me.but i have enough German peasant stubborness to keep trying.i bought this neat gardening stool with handles on the sides to help me get up.i managed to get 2 tomato plants and some pepper plants in the ground.dig a hole, set plant in, walk to compost bin for compost,add the compost to hole, then add the rich organic soil with fertilizer.then tamp it down.then water it.wore me out.fibro also siphons your energy into some black hole in the universe where it gets recycled into toddlers.that is my theory ....resting now.hoping my body decides to work again today.LOVE being out there and working......i have a few more plants to get in then starting on the seeds.i have decided to ignore the fact that i am late and live in the joy of the moment.

There's nothing wrong with being late. It is better than not ever getting the planting done at all, and most years, a late planting of most things still will produce a nice harvest. The horrific heat/drought of 2011 was not a year when late planting paid off, but most years are not like 2011.

The older and stiffer I get, the more I find that I have to pace myself and not overdo things too much in one day, but I just work along at it as steadily as possible and try to stay on task and on track. We're not spring chickens any more, but that doesn't mean we have to give up gardening---we just garden at a different pace now.

Some years, the weather makes it impossible for even the most schedule-driven gardener to get everything done "on time", so I've learned to settle for just getting things done eventually. Eventually also is better than never.

I hope to spend more time in the garden today despite all the mud and standing water. With all the rain this week, it has been hard to do anything more than just harvesting.

I completely understand. I have been cheating in my protocol this week, eating grain and even a potato and I have been so sore stiff and horrible feeling. Back on the wagon for me. Did not realize cheating a little would be that bad so quick. All I could do last night was sit on my little cart and pull thousands of weeds

I still have not figured out how to pace myself. I have decided I am destined to go full speed ahead until I colapse. I thought I would eventually learn but nope not going to happen.

leava, now I know where my grandson gets all that energy. Ha ha

I'm the same way. When I was younger, I could shop till I dropped. Now I just work until I drop. Same principle. I doubt I'll ever change, but I really do try harder to pace myself nowadays. I just generally don't succeed at it.

I guess this thread is a good place to say I FINALLY have all the tomato plants set out. They all already had blooms and some had fruit. I planted determinates in straw yesterday and dwarfs in pots today. We took some extras to the Y today and just about had a stampede. I had to grab the ones I'd promised to people before they walked away.

Amy glad you got yours planted.....someone gave me a 6 pack of maybe beefmaster or something tomatoes.poor orphans are still not planted.hacked a bunch of tall weeds and then put black plastic over the area of former compost heap.am going to wait just a bit then cut holes in plastic and plant them there.have to figure out support system.....i had planted 2 tomatoes i wanted in my one bed.but i did not want the ones i was given should have said no thank you but did not...had some containers all ready to go so planted jalapeno pepper plants for a dear friend i don't eat them and banana peppers in another for us.the containers are halves of big 55 gallon drum with holes drilled and set on 4 milk crates each.and 2 more golden bell peppers in plot.making some progress.happy :)

I know you're feeling good about your progress. It is therapy for us. I would do nothing all day if not forced by garden deadlines. I am really proud today, because we did water aerobics this morning and then I worked in the garden for 3 hours. I will pay for it tonight. I have some of those drums. Wanted them for rain barrels, but DH says they wont work, so maybe planters instead. I don't eat hot peppers either, though I might put one in salsa. DH likes them pickled and daughter loves them.
