I wonder if it would help to know what the mantel is? How will it break it up if you run the tile to the ceiling? Just a thought.

why are the tiles slightly different? if this is the natural variation, you should have spread the different ones throughout the bottom.

I would stop personally. Can you return the unused tile?

I don't know what The Experts would say, but I think it looks great the way it is. Then the top of the stone is a natural mantel and you don't need to add anything else. Going higher could be a more modern look, but that feels out of place in your room.

This is a matter of preference and the look you are trying to create. As a rule, it looks more "natural" if you extend to the ceiling (my preference in many cases, particularly with natural stone).

Thanks so much for everyone's comments. I really appreciate it! The tile is slightly different because it is a stone. I realized too late that I should have mixed the stones up instead of trying to make a stripped design. The part above the mantel is set back 6 inches, so it was just going to be a natural mantel. I think the fact that it sets back is what's causing some lighting issues and making the above tiles look more yellow.

The variation in color if that continued to the ceiling would really kill me. I think it's beautiful the way you have it laid out the way it is. What are you using on the hearth? A solid tile?

I would take it to the top & use a reclaimed beam for the mantel. Go big or go home.

I think it looks great as it is. I like how well you have matched the tiles for a striated look. I would have been bothered if the tiles had not been matched, because of the clashing edges. I would stop at this height: even with the recessed wall above, it could be too much tile for the room, but it all depends upon your personal preference. What are you using for the hearth and mantel? I will look forward to your "before and after" postings.

If you don't have the matching material to continue further I would suggest stopping where you are with the stone. Add whatever mantle piece you desire to finish off the top edge, and I think you will have a great looking fireplace.
