It is a bulb, with a flower. They just want toreproduce!

Yep it's not scaping like garlic does, it is bolting. Onions which are biennial normally do this on their second year but sometimes conditions like being exposed to a hard freeze after they have several leaves can make them think that they are in their second year.

I have 4 types of onions planted (Candy, Red Candy, Superstar, and Red Marble Cipolinni that all came from Dixondale starts and were planted at the same time in early March. A few of the Red Cipolinni are currently bolting but not any of the others.

So....will it stop onions from bulbing? Is there any benefit to cutting them off? Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have noticed the same thing with my onions today. They are Walla Walla and I planted them last Fall.

Once the onion bolts you might as well pull it. It's not going to bulb up any further and it won't keep very long. The center of whatever bulb you have will be green and can rot from the inside.

But it's not like it's a total waste. You can still eat what's there!

If you are pulling spring onions anyway, just pull this one next and eat it. It remains completely edible.
