Rate This Peony Season
Different areas may have had different experiences. Here in southern Ohio, May was a cool month for the first two thirds of the month. Then we were plunged into mid-summer temps. The cooler-than-normal temps might have allowed peony blooms to last longer, but unfortunately heavy rains battered many at key points. Then, the later ones were fried by July-like weather. It was a bit disappointing, but it is very difficult to get a really good season. I would rate this a 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. It was not at all average though.
Charles Burgess got some afternoon shade, which helped this later bloomer.
A bucket of Festiva Supreme, an excellent cut flower (if you like masses of strong color), though it blooms late and tends to get fried if not picked.
La Perle was not the height it was supposed to be.
Finally, in this odds-and-ends post, I wonder if anyone can identify this flower. It blooms later in the season, and while it is a good cut flower, its stems are weak. I've always thought it is not Sara Bernhardt, because it blooms slightly earlier than the Sara I have (but perhaps it is just a matter of different locations). There is occasional tiny red edging on some petals. I often thought it might be Dresden Pink. Does anyone have a picture of Dresden Pink?
Upon further thought, I think this must be Sara Bernhardt, just blooming in a shadier section of the garden. It never gets the large blooms of more established Saras. A mundane way to end the post of a disappointing, but not disastrous, season.

It's Felix Supreme. Sorry. There are quite a few bushes of Festiva Supreme in the cemetery. Here's one I took last year:

The reddish pink one is Felix Supreme. Here are a few flowers left on the bush:
Karen, there was one section of the cemetery that had about a dozen bushes of Festiva Supreme on different graves. Perhaps they were relatives, or people shared their peonies with neighbors.
