It's June!

last modified: 10 years ago

Today is the day I realise I really should finish up my garden projects before it gets too hot!

Might go out and plant some roses that I've had it pots for a while this morning.

NOID rose my grandmother planted. In the morning and evening it smells like ashtray. But in the heat it smells like cinnamon gum.

My lavender rose put out a very pink, and deformed bud. But oh my gosh. It's the most fragrant I've ever smelled it!

A native bee visiting my Angel face rose.

Rose Buds everywhere.

A dragon fly has been visiting my ponds.

I've decided my potato vine is fragrant. I still can't smell anything close to the flower but that marshmallow scent only appears when this starts blooming. It's light and elusive. I love how the buds and flowers emerge in a fractal.

It's really starting to fill in this year!

My Kaffir lime with it's delightfully scented leaves.

This is somehow blooming despite it's steady decline.

And my pink Jasmine is still putting out the odd cluster of blooms.

I can't wait to see what you guys have blooming.

Those roses look beautiful! I am always scared to plant them because of the bugs it attracts. Ofcourse the biggest threat is japanese beetle.

    Cestrum parqui in full bloom!

Queen Elizabeth rose. Love the beautiful baby pink color.

Such nice specimens, everyone! The only new thing for June so far is my Lilium washingtonianum. Grown from seed from Mt Hood.

First bloom of the year on Hemerocallis 'Hyperion'. I love its sweet light scent.

Luckily black spot and Japanese beetles aren't a thing here. We have other rose issues lol.

Here's what most of those buds look like today.

My cactus bloomed. Lovely intense fragrance at night. Bubblegum Jasmine?

Sadly only lasts for a day or two.

My... Duranta? I think that's what it's called.

    Sweet vanilla type fragrance.

Hopefully I'll have roses open soon that are used to the heat.

The brunfelsia is also open and quite nice... The lilies are almost starting too! And the Haemanthus which has a lovely fresh scent if you're willing to risk getting pollinated while sniffing.

Haemanthus humilis finally opened. Very fresh scent.

Robert, beautiful work as always...I'm amazed to see that we have the same plants mostly and yet yours are always ahead of mines! At least by a month! My Lilies are just showing small green buds..Crazy Do you ever have to keep those little red beetle off of them?

I wish I lived further south, let me tell you. Now I am about to receive temps down into the forties for the next three days when we should be basking in very warm summer temps..It makes no sense and is very frustrating...

    Lilium regale is just starting.

Brunfelsia..love the fragrance! Almost a little like jasmine tortuosum.

My night blooming water lily opened! Texas Shell Pink.

It's so big! I didn't realise how small my Dauben really is until the bloom opened.

I wouldn't call the fragrance cinnamon, nor pungent. I find it really pleasant. Sweet, but almost medicinal.

Like candied anise, or a really sweet rootbeer.

Here you can see the size difference between my Dauben's leaves and my Texas Shell Pink.

My Dwarf Sag bloomed. I took a sniff. Smells like daisies. Not my favourite.

Cute though. You can see a second bud on Texas Shell Pink.

My Water Poppy bloomed. Not fragrant but cute.

Mike, sorry it's been cold up there. I'm sure it will be too hot soon enough. :)

The main pest beetles I have to deal with are the spotted cucumber beetles who love to eat my flowers, especially my brug blooms. :(

The 'Double Belle of India' jasmine finally threw a bloom with multiple layers of petals. Most blooms come out with 2 layers or so.

hey guys! I've been away a week so I came home to a plague as usual but there was a nice surprise at least! I present to you my ..gulliver's honeysuckle!!:

Lonicera hildebrandiana actually. The scent is similar to ordinary japanese honeysuckle but lighter.

That's a gorgeous jasmine Robert! If you don't mind my asking can you let me know where you bought this cultivar from.

What? There is a Double Belle of India?? Where did you get it? :)))

Haha. I thought my Jasminum sambac variety from India that I bought off eBay from Bunti might get some people excited. ;)

Lol Robert excited is a really mild word :) My mom has the same variety in India. Next time I probably will try to get a cutting from India.

    Gorgeous plants everyone.

And so many varieties of sambac Jasmine you guys have! I'm quite jealous.

    That Panama Pacific is gorgeous.

I forgot to update you guys on my first night blooming water lily flower.

The second night it looked like this. I don't know why.

Then the petals went back up the next night. And it slowly turned more pink.

Then the flower lasted 6 days. Which blew my mind. My Dauben lasts for 3, maybe 4 days.

    Here's a pond shot.

Do any of you remember that lotus seed I sprouted from one of those florist pods? It's got lots of roots, 2 leaves, and two more on the way.

My sambac is finally starting to bloom.

My Mystery gardenia is blooming. I forgot to take a picture of the open bloom before I took it inside.

And this little guy was on sale for $5 so I picked him up.

My stephanotis is starting to open.

The lily flowers are lasting about 3 or 4 days now.

Somehow them not lasting as long as the first makes me feel better.

    From this morning.

Both are open at the same time for an hour each morning before the night blooming one closes.

I honestly don't remember which gardenia this is... Chuck Hayes maybe.

Looks a lot like chuck Hayes to me, tho mine died... Too cold and wet maybe. Frostproof does way better in Portland than any of the others.

My dianthus noeanus petraeus has started. It's wafting across the deck and is lovely.
