My new house haste a gold color on walls that looks fine in some rooms and horrible in others, and at different times of day. I can't afford to make a mistake in choosing a replacement color, or colors, because it is too tall for me to do myself. I have gold colored drapes (came with house) that I kinda like, and they go remarkably well with a large painting, but seem to limit my color choices. I need a "clean" color as the current one tends to look dingy and dirty. My living room is my biggest worry, I'd paint it a nice white, but I just foolishly bought a white sofa for the room ;-(. I like accent walls so maybe that is the solution?? Here are photos first of room, flooring will be same as stairs.
