I have similar flush mounts in my kitchen- also love the look. Are you considering the pendants for your island? I think that would be a great choice- I hate looking up at some pendants and being blinded by the bare bulb.

I love the diffused light that our schoolhouse lights give off. We have semi flush for general light in the kitchen and a pendant style above the sink for task light. Like johnsoro, I hate seeing bare bulbs; I'd skip the barn light unless there is a style that includes a diffuser type of lens.

I'm also doing a vintage kitchen. From Rejuvenation, I got a "Jefferson" semi flush mount for the center of the kitchen with a schoolhouse shade, and two Rose City pendants, one for over the sink and one for over the breakfast nook. I order the Rose City pendants without the shades (didn't like Rejuvenations offerings for the 3.25 fitter Rose City) and found inexpensive schoolhouse shades ($6.50 each) for them from Lowes. They look beautiful!

There are a number of schoolhouse pendants online. I originally ordered the Sea Gull Academy small size but ended up returning it because I didn't like the shade.

Yes! I'm a fan - we got these from Restoration Hardware (on sale thankfully). We put in 100W equivalent LEDs so the amount of light isn't bad. It depends whether you want direct task lighting over the island - you might want something with a little more direct light. We put 2 can's over our sink so we had some bright directed light. The 2 flush mount schoolhouse type lights are the main lights for the kitchen and nook area - we use these exclusively most of the time, but it's nice to have the cans and UCL when needed.

I have a semi-flush over the sink (with LED) and one in the hallway. Kind of like a landing area if there were any stairs. (With CFL) I like them both and actually turn the sink one on when I actually need light. Which is not that often. Diffused or not, they make a lovely feel.

I love my schoolhouse lights, wouldn't trade them for anything. I like that the light isn't super harsh overhead, and these combined with the recess lighting I have in the kitchen work well together so there's the right amount of lighting. I also have different schoolhouse lights in my master bath as well as some hallways in my home.

I'm glad you like them! They look all squashed in these pictures! I confess, I can't remember what brand they are--whatever is the one that was 94.08 for an 8 inch pendant at homedepot.com :) I knew exactly what I wanted them to look like and I had a Home Depot gift card so it made my shopping fairly simple. Finding a light for over my table was another story!! :)

I think the peninsula is between 6-7feet long. I confess I'm in bed and there is very little that could get me up right now!!

Owlface I believe your pendants look like Progress Lighting schoolhouse lights. We also love schoolhouse lights and will be using them in the great room in our current lakehouse build, with LED bulbs. We also did not want to look directly into bulbs and prefer the ambient lighting provided by the closed schoolhouse style. Since we're not at that stage of the build yet I don't have photos.

lakeerieamber- My cabinets are clear hickory with a grey stain. I work in a custom cabinet shop, so no brand info or anything, we made them in-house and I had the stain mixed specifically for me.

We installed schoolhouse lights in our lake kitchen 9 yrs. ago. We love the glare free but adequate task lighting they provide over the island where I do most of my prep. I rarely turn on our can lights. Over the sink we have a semiflush. Ours are from Rejuvenation & the finishes on the fixtures look new despite years of use & cleaning. The sconces over the sideboard are from them, too.

My favorite is the hinged one in the stairwell with the painted blue bands. I'd get them again for sure. I think they do the job, add charm but aren't fussy or hard to clean.

They are, however, hard to photograph when turned on. Sorry for the dark pic.
