A 5 to 7 ft obelisk will support a lax shrub rose, but will be eaten alive by a climber.

I was hoping that by training the canes horizontally, I could get away with, say, a 7 ft obelisk. I don't want anything toppling over since we have, on occasion , had strong winds.

No. Hardy climbers, those that will be cane hardy below zone 7, are too stiff to be wrapped around much of anything. They can be trained horizontally along something like a split rail fence, but not something narrow.

I purchased the Chic Farming Trellis and love it - very sturdy and looks nice. I protect my climbers with layers of burlap during the winter with good success so far.

oldworldroses, I found mine at Hyvee groceries stores. They were very well made. I have had them for a good seven years. I check every year hoping to get more of them. No luck as of now thou. I checked home depot on line they had some. The thing I liked about Hyvee's little garden center were the reasonable prices. Good luck finding something you like.

Thats why it so hard break down and get another one. Mine at Hyvee were under 20$. Not anymore!

yes these are expensive Patty, but I figure a good sturdy one should last better than something flimsy. I kept putting off buying one last year and now my local nursery stopped carrying them

Hi..I have a Veilchenblau rose(baby) and am looking for an obelisk or tripod type stand for it. Most all that are reasonably priced are only 1ft x 1ft base. I wondering if that would be wide enough? Most are around 82 in tall.

Need one for a Madame Pierre Oger too..she sprawls all over the place..these 1 x 1 ft ones would probably be OK for her.

Agree with Dave For nice looking sturdy obelisks and trellises you cant beat hpotter. They are a bit of an investment but last forever looking brand new.

Hpotter and local company are at top of list! Thanks..Veilchenblau becomes a monster..more wide with longish canes..an obelisk would be perfect. Not what I consider a climber really. Grew it in zone 5 with no support. ..4ft wide! and more! Arms reaching out to grab you!! lol

I have purchased several obelisks and trellis.

H Potter are rod iron so they last, no rust, and are the best. They are a few years old trellises now and look brand new-worth the investment. H POTTER trellis/obelisks-The Best!

I bought an obelisk custom made of steel with green paint-rusted by end of first season. May repaint w/ anti-rust finish, but haven’t heard of it working well. I di not recommend steel trellis/obelisks.

I bought other metal trellises that didn’t last/rusted. .

I have 2 small 3 ft black, all rod iron obelisks -all fabulous-no rust-few years old.

I have 2 white ”cast aluminum” Bistro tabketable/chair sets , too. Cast aluminum lasts for years outside, sturdy, no rust.

Also, VIRIDIAN BAY, in San Fransisco, has the most beutiful, rust oroof-sturdy trellises - THE BEST!!! I bought one on sale in August 50 percent off-lasts forever!!! Tgey have plain, floral & other designs.
