i'm not quite certain if you mean island and perimeter cabinets, or island and perimeter countertops.

i'm a fan of a different island, it allows you to choose something you like thats a little more out there without having to commit to all of the cabinets OR counters being that way.

go safe on the perimeter, wild on the island.

I tend toward making all cabinets in a room the same finish, moldings, colors, etc. This helps combat the natural clutter that gathers all over a kitchen even when it is not in use for cooking. From these comments, it sounds like the only "right" solution is the one that best matches your taste and the way you use your kitchen. Good luck!
