Is this a named tree? Grafted or not? Is the scent strong or light? Pretty

This is a grafted plant. No name. Scent strong when flower first opens. It is very strange that I have 3 plants.

Maybe if you get seeds they might have a scent also.

The flower is beautiful even if it didn't have a scent. The scent is an added bonus.

I don't like my chances of the seeds being scented.

Marlene, if you ever do have seeds, please keep me in mind. I would love to have some. I am new to adeniums. I have two red ones and one yellow with red stripes. I put a picture of it on my profile picture. I love this forum. It has lots of postings to learn from. And some beautiful pictures.

I didn't know any Adenium was scented.

I have 2 other scented adeniums. One seedling and another grafted one which are completely different plants.

Are the scents the same or similar? Maybe it is what you are adding that causes that.

Marcia, The scents are the same. When the flower first opens the scent is very strong. I do not add very much in the way of nutrients and they are mainly planted in gravel because it can be cold here as well and I do not have enough covered area to protect them. I do not water during the winter and it is only this year that I noticed the scent. The temperature here this morning is 6 degrees C.

Marlene, are you in Florida? I have read several posts by people in Florida who claim to have adeniums with a sweet cinnamony fragrance.

The fact that your fragrant adeniums are all different varieties in varying stages of growth tells me there is a common denominator, not necessarily the adenium itself. Has the scented seedling also bloomed?

This is a conundrum, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma...with beautiful flowers!

LatinLady this is the seedling that has the fragrance. Single petals. I live in Hervey Bay Queensland Australia which is approximately 300km north of Brisbane. The climate is subtropical. South of the Tropic of Capricorn. I noticed that on the other picture I just posted is an "X" I clicked on this and the picture came up. Thank you Marlene

Hmm ... Would you happen to have another scented tree, such as plumeria, nearby? I'm wondering if scent could be transferred to adeniums via companion planting.

Absolutely gorgeous perfumed blooms, Marlene. Enjoy them and please do keep sharing. We can only hope to learn the mystery of the scented adenium and replicate it one day soon.

Marlene, your DRs are breathtaking.

Marlene there is a breeder here in FL that is breeding a scented adenium with some success. I have seen and smelled it first hand a few weeks ago. It does smell like sweet cinnamon. If you have Big Red gum there, it smells exactly like that. It smells wonderful and quite strong too. The breeders name is Robert and he owns Living Sculpture Sanctuary in Davie, FL.

There are no scented trees nearby. These plants were placed in a very confined area last Winter without much air circulation and I would say that is why the scent was so strong. Thank you halfwaythere for the links. I will certainly check out Roberts comments. Marlene

I recently noticed the following KO seeds have names that imply that the blooms are fragrant:

- Fragrant Cloud

- Fragrant Delight

- Fragrant Star

- Super Perfume

I asked Mr. KO whether that is the case. His response: "Faint scent, more fragrant in a confined environment."

I ordered Fragrant Cloud. We shall see!

Marie Elena, Mr KO has answered for us all and this is why I was able to smell them in the confined space where I had them for Winter.

I spoke to a friend this evening who has many of these plants and has been growing them for years. She told me that some of the triple whites have also a fragrance.

Whoa! The KO whites, like these, are scented? Sweet!! I just purchased seeds!

That is great. I hope that they flourish and give you the delightful perfume!

Out in the garden for my morning inspection amongst my adeniums I noticed an overpowering perfume. I found these two adeniums the perfume or scent is so strong. My previous ones have all been in a confined area.

Oh great. I can barely juggle regular adeniums and now I found out certain ones have great fragrances.

Please keep reporting back especially about KO seeds or if you have any for trade. Scented adeniums may feed the addiction to expand. :)

Hi Marlene, i am lusting over your last 2 photos. Sooooo pretty. (Were they grown from seed or are they grafted?)

I am new to the forum, but have been growing Adeniums for 15 years. I live in Brisbane, Australia. I too have scented Adeniums. I have a pure white single that I have had for 15 years that has always had a beautiful scent. (Bought here as a seedling) It reminds me of a light frangipani scent or like the mock orange (murraya paniculata) hedges that everyone grows here in Brisbane. I also have some other scented ones, singles, doubles etc - but all white or light coloured flowers. In contrast my husband collects dark reds, red blacks and other dark coloured flowering Adeniums and he doesn't get a fragrance. I do think this is more specific to the light or white coloured Adeniums. My thoughts are that the scent comes from the 'white' inherited gene. I have grown seed from my single white 15yr old Adenium, and the scent is passed down to many of the offspring. (All whites) A couple of my other scented ones were grown from seed from Mr KO. (All light coloured)

One of my upcoming experiments; will be grafting an Adenium to a Plumeria, and vice versa. Perhaps off this prolific bloomer.

Rachel, Thank you and welcome to this forum. Some are from seed and others grafted but I have also noticed that all the blooms have some white. No dark ones as you said. But will keep smelling. Maybe we will catch up sometime. I will now check out your thread now.

My scented adenium picture won the monthly competition for February on an adenium forum here in Queensland. So proud and love this picture.

Thank you Rachel. How are your plants handeling this extreme heat and humidity that we are experiencing. I actually live on the beach front so we do get some breeze off the ocean. The majority of adenium lovers on this forum would be shivering.

Hi Marlene, our plants are doing pretty well in the heat, although we have noticed that flowering has slowed down a little bit. We are watering every day at the moment, as our plants are in full sun ALL day. We had 37c yesterday & today is expected to hit 39degrees Celsius.

As for us, we are melting. It is the northerly breeze that is killing us, it just blows the hot air at us all day. (No air con in our house) I hope the extreme heat wave ends soon.... :) I hope your plants are ok in this heat.

Hi Marlene thanks for info and share of your beautiful plants I also have 8 white adeniums all from seed .. after reading your post I tried the smell test and discovered that 5 of single whites also have a light fragrance 1 even has pods I hadn't noticed before as all my plants are outside in full sun. All my plants are from seeds collected from a friends garden in Cairns good genes or just lucky. So envious of you beach side location 45-49C here all week with scorching winds and super hi humidity every thing in the garden is suffering from sunburn even adeniums

So happy for you that you have discovered some of your plants have a fragrance. It is a very odd thing, each day I am finding a new bloom with a fragrance. Maybe it has a lot to do with the weather. I have never seen sunburn so bad on the plants that are exposed to the full days sun. The ones grown in morning sun only are not effected and are thriving.
