Do you grow your cacti in containers or in the ground?

I grow mine in containers. I haul them in the house when it gets cold and out of the house when it warms up. I have put a spineless prickly pear in the ground last year that is doing great. I have a crazy passion for cactus and succulents.

I lost most off my original collection in the tornado but the other day I was counting what I have now and I have replaced almost everyone that I lost, they are just smaller.

I have a hard time keeping cacti alive in the ground here too. We have too much clay. There are native prickly pears scattered around and I thought nothing ever would kill them, but then the summer of 2011 actually did kill them. I was shocked. They started growing back, ever so slowly, and then last year's flooding got most of them. There's one right between the edge of the woods and my garden fence that survived, and I've seen some new ones sprouting out in the pastures where we haven't had them before. Someday I'll have cacti and succulents in pots that I can overwinter indoors or in the greenhouse. That's on my "one of these days" list. I just never get around to doing it because the edible garden takes up all my time.

I trimmed one of ny large rangy cactus today. Now I have 14 cuttings that I should throw away but I have then laid out on the porch drying. What will I do with 14 additional of one plant. To make it worse it's not the prettiest cactus in the group. I will give them away till people start to avoid me. Ha ha

i could just put them down by the road and add a sign that says "Free".
