I'm mainly growing mine for the foliage (I'm hoping to create a screen between myself and my neighbours on our deck). Alas, something's been nibbling away at the leaves, so I don't think they'll live to see warmer weather. Perhaps I'll try next year and pick a warmer/sunnier spot.

Yes it is a morning glory, species Convolvulus tricolor. It has cultivar names of Royal Ensign or Blue Ensign. I got the seeds from a Burpees seed display at the supermarket. I just love the colors.

I think they like sun. Here are some pics of mine. They are growing better in the sunny parts.

I was just thinking, it's probably not a drainage problem. Last year I grew morning glories in pots in the area with the trellises (photo above). This year I removed the pots and added the trellises. The morning glories had seeded from last year and grew up from the ground. The vines you see on the left are coming up in the sunniest spot. This year I have some in the pot with the white trellis (see second photo) that I transplanted from the other spot and they're doing great in the sunny area. I hope your morning glories grow this year in the pots! If there's sunlight a decent portion of the day they should be good. It's the all day shade they don't like.

Kris, I think you're right and the sunshine is a big factor. I moved a couple of pots to a sunnier location, but they're being eaten by ants, I think, so it's a bad comparison.

I'm jealous of your vines. If my picture shows up below, that's how terrible they look.

Give it time. My seeds took awhile to take off last summer and they can be picky where they want to sprout. Once they pick a spot watch out, they will keep coming! Try an organic fertilizer. Just throw a handful in there and that will help. I occasionally do coffee grounds too.

Thanks for all the info everyone. The vines eventually did take off. There weren't as many as I'd hoped, but they looked great. They're just blooming now (in the evening oddly enough). Next year I'll try something else there that doesn't need as much sun.
