Just some diverse seedlings

Little over a year ago I order three small seed packets from an eBay seller. Some were adenium "rcn" some adenium arabicum shada, and some a mix of species and hybrids that were supposed to make red flowers. Truly a mixed bag. Anyway it produced some diverse types I wanted to share. Since I'm fond of the dwarf types I included the two smallest seedlings. Which are pretty puny for being over a year old. The first one is pretty typical and vigorous the next is a different type I think of the shada variety third is the runt of the litter very small fourth is also small but branched with red-ish skin finally a more vigorous dwarf wine glass is for scale. I really am having a hard time understanding the planting medium that Todd shows here and what I see most of you using in your pictures. Is there no potting soil at all-or is what I'm seeing just top dressing and why?. I'm sure this appears to be a real dumb question, but what exactly is in those pots that allow that kind of great looking results? Again, thanks, Ed V in Fl.

And Todd, those are bright and healthy ones! One of my oldest seed-grown adenium is only about 3 inches tall at about 3 years old now.

Most of those are planted in an entirely inorganic coarse mineral substrate (turface, floor dry, and planted aquarium substrate called eco eco-complete) sometimes I mix in bark and or crushed pecan shells or a coconut husk product depending on what I have. Turface is calciNed bentonite, floor dry is calciNed diotamaceous earth, the aquarium substrate is calciNed basalt. Any acceptable container mix is soiless. (No sand silt or clay) and the very best ones are coarse with a high percentage of mineral particles.
