African violet propagation by seed and leaf

Hello everyone, my name is Catherine and I am new to this forum. I live near Montréal, Canada, and I am no gardening pro, but I love to live around plants, and experiment with them. Some people are compulsive shoe buyers... I love to buy plants! I am presently growing Mango and date seeds just for fun, but AV are my true and real new vegetal... obsession!

I recently bought 1 package of fantasy AV from Mr. Nadeau online. I am sharing a picture of the microseedlings on day 11. So far, I can count around 30 of them... not so bad! I chose to experiment with seeds just because I find it fascinating that these tiny, tiny dusty things can grow into mature AV... I also love the surprise factor: each plant Will be unique, and nature forces me to wait many months to see the results!

Here are the seedlings on day 11:

For this propagation experiment, I also bought a few leaves, again online, from Bloomlovers. I chose varieties that intrigued me, colours and shapes that can't be found at supermarkets around here. For AV Affectionados, here are the ones I chose: Chantaspring, Gunnaroo, Neptune, Blue Mint, Emergency, Arapahoe and Red Robe.

I know I have to be patient to see the babies Come out. I read anything from 2 months to a year, right?

Here they are:

Since I really enjoy reading posts with pictures on plant propagation and evolution, I guess I am not the only one! I will Come back here to show you my babies !

Thank you Irina... My grow lab is pretty basic! The violets are growing in a 5,99$ "jiffy" greenhouse in my kitchen window facing East. I took away the peat capsules ( I will use them for something else) and used recycled plastic containers from my outdoor plants to put in the green house...

The leaves are in my bedroom, in recycled plastic food containers...

The only "fancy" equipment is a "Ottlite" grow bulb to give extra light to the leaves. I don't know if artificial light is necessary or optional, what do you think? The window is facing west....

I think light is a must. The seeds do not wake up without good light. West is kind of iffy - it can cook your stuff in closed containers ...

The seedlings on day 17. Still pretty small, but I can count more than 60 of them

I love growing things from seed. Attempting some living stones currently. I am excited to see how your project progresses!

Hi Kim! I have seen living stones in a seed catalogue...It is something I would really love to try! Growth is probable super slow, right? When did you start this project? Are you sharing pictures somewhere on this forum?

I was told AV seeds grow VERY slowly after germination.... I can officially say that YES, growth is slooww! . The second set of leaves is still not showing.

I have noticed that when temperature is very hot, over 30 C or too cold, under 20 C, growth stops.

Here are my seedlings today, on day 24.

I have pictures posted in the Cacti and Succulent forum. It took a couple weeks to germinate, and I have had luck with 2 of the 3 species I attempted. I bought seed in 25 packs, have 5 seedlings of one type and 3 of the other. Not a high sucess rate I am afraid.

And my Lithops have been sloooowwww. I have some more seeds to sow soon, 2 more types of Lithops and another relative called Titanopsis hugo-schkecteri that I will try in October. And some columnar cacti and agave. Soon, I will have seeds of Dischidia pectinoides and a carnivorous sundew called a Cape sundew from my own plants to try growing.

I love the idea of growing fantasy African violets from seed. Though, I do not know much about them, will only some be fantasy type?

Yes, only some of them will be fantasy type... These features are recessively inherited, I guess. Here is the description on Nadeau's web site:

    " Product Description

Our Fantasy flowers African violet seeds produce plants whose flowers are bi-colored or have fancy markings or streaks, but only with around 25% of the plants. Most of the plants will be of standard size and shape."

I also think I will get mostly blue - purple- lilac colours, since these are the dominant colours for AV.... I would be thrilled to have a few Red or white violets!

Here are my seedlings today. I planted them one month ago ( May 28th).

I transfered some seedlings to a second 4" pot because they were too closely packed... They don't seem to have suffered from the transplant!

I thought Nadeau's fantasy mix only included green foliage, but I think I do have a few variegated plants... I really hope so...

Do you think these are variegated?

They sure look like it to me, but I am hardly knowledgable on AV babies. Need to get some seeds though!

I really hope so! I will watch these very closely... this is exciting

They do not look variegaed to me - the young leaves are so tender - they look like they have some insignificant leaf damage - may be too wet.. I would say you need to start moving them - repot in a lighter soil - probably the similar soil but split with 30% perlite to increase the air in a soil. Plus at that age - you repot them - tickle the roots - they grow faster.

Thank you Irina for your comment, I will try to move them soon, with à lighter soil ☺
