No Blooms on Charles Joly Lilac

Since I got some great replies on my Mock Orange rejuvenation post, here's another ...

I have a Charles Joly that was purchased 3 years ago, is growing well and appears quite healthy, but has never produced blooms. It gets full direct sun until about 2pm and has never been pruned. I have 2 Miss Kim's in nearby beds that were planted about the same time and flower profusely and most other shrubs in the same or nearby beds flourish with blooms. My only thoughts are soil that's too acidic or lack of potash so I'll do a soil test this weekend, but in the mean time any other feedback is appreciated.

one might suggest.. that if 2 others are blooming.. this one3 can not have a relevant soil issue ...

no pruning of buds in late summer???

any hyper fertilizing???

Common lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) like the 'Charles Joly' need time to mature before they start blooming. That juvenile stage can take as long as 5 years before you will see bloom.

'Miss Kim' is a different species of lilac and one that tends to start blooming at a very young age. Comparing the two is really not advisable - different plants, different habits.

You just need to be a bit more patient :-) It will happen.

or the next time the house needs painting.. why you didnt plant it another 5 to 10 feet away from the house ...

you might want to consider moving it this fall .. before its too late ...
