Garden Thoughts on Life

I'm grandchild free tonight, and was just thinking how much my garden contributes to my life. It's more than the sum of its products. I think it was Aristotle that said that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts".

I had a beautiful and sweet-hearted son. When he was little, like my grandson, he used to work with me in the garden. He died, and I keep this garden, come hell or high water.

I ordered a sign, for my garden. It's a poem from Dorothy Frances Gurney, called "God's Garden". It's just a piece from the poem....and I teach it to my grandson every time we are in the garden: The kiss of the sun for pardon--the song of the birds for mirth. One is nearer God's heart in a garden-- then anywhere else on earth.

I try to teach the little one that this all about creation and life. How life is a cycle, and a gift.

I love how you said that your garden is more than the sum of its parts. I believe that is so true for all of us.

I am so sorry to hear that you lost your son. I cannot imagine the pain that results from such a loss, and I believe that the garden is one way to find peace and healing after suffering such a great loss of someone you loved so much.

I never set out to become a gardening maniac or garden-obsessed, but I found it happened anyway. Gardening isn't something I do, it is all about who I am. It isn't a hobby, it isn't an area of interest, it isn't a way to fill time....it is who I am, and what I do. It feeds my soul. I suspect the same is true for you.

And when I die, it wouldn't bother me if I drop dead right there in the garden either. What a way to go! Of course, I'm hoping it won't happen any time soon. I've even thought of suggesting to Tim that I be cremated and he scatter my ashes in the garden if I go before he does, but then I don't know if he and our son might think that's sort of creepy.
