The seam that is on the bottom (toward the feed dogs) will sometimes get turned when sewing. You just have to remember to be careful an hold or pin them straight as they go under the presser foot.

Grammyp, I had the problem you mention above on my first top, but I had another problem with my first quilt top as well. It was a disappearing nine patch. I pressed to the dark side. Everything went together just fine. However, when I cut the squares into fourths and put them back together, I did not end up with all of my seams nesting as I expected. I would have all four layers of fabric on one side. Of course, some nested as they "should".

Is there some solution for that? I don't see how you can eleminate that problem. Of course, I'm a newbie.

I had planned to make another D9P, but haven't. I contemplated making it like sashing instead. I'm not sure which would be easier.

Sometimes the seam has to go under the lighter fabric in order to nest them. I prefer doing that instead of opening all the seams to lie flat.

When you rotate the pieces in the D9P you affect how the seam lays. Like Sharon said, sometimes it just goes to the light side, and that is OK. It may be necessary to press some in the other direction after you cut them. Try making a sample block and try doing that.

If you've pressed, then sewed it to the dark side, do you go back and rip out the seam and change the direction of the press? That's the only solution I can see.

Yes that's how a bunch of my seams turned out. Just like your picture but I didn't snip them. Just ironed them as flat as I could. It was like 3 in the morning and I had to be at work at 8 so redoing it wasn't going to happen lol
