You could consider getting deep end tables as night stands.

HI -- There are tables that have telescoping tops -- coffee tables , but maybe get someone to make side tables that do the same thing .

This must be a rather common problem! Someone should invent something! LOL

How about a nightstand that has a slide out surface? I went on wayfair and searched "nightstand slide out" and found some, here is just one pic to demonstrate.

Put wheels on the nightstands.

When the head of the bed is elevated (like sitting up in bed) we are about 3-4 feet forward from the headboard. A slight pull out would be insufficient. We've tried setting the night stands at the useable place but now we have a huge space behind them. We hadn't considered the "sofa table" idea instead of the nightstand. Maybe that would work.

I love deco's solution - but I wonder if there is a similar product that just goes halfway across? So you and your hubby can position differently if needed. I think hospitals have a version that is more of a swing arm rather than all the way across.

We actually have a hospital type adjustable table, but it looks so industrial. But that said, we could get or build the table like Deco suggested just in two halves. Probably would require some structural support design, but I think we are on the right track!!

Yes I was hoping maybe there was a pretty, non-hospital looking version. I actually love the idea. I could really see it being useful and I don't even have an adjustable bed, but I like to lean against the headboard/pillows and read/do crosswords/watch TV etc. I might have to do a search for myself!

Edited to say, I did a quick search, and there are options out there! Can't post pics or links at the moment because I'm at work, but I googled "rolling desk for bed" and a number of products came up, many were not all the way across.

We got a new bed a few years ago, nightstands are now on the low side in comparison but we don't plan to replace, so this could really work for us. Thanks for getting the idea rolling for me (pun intended)!

Apparently you are fortunate enough not to have any health issues requiring you to spend more time in bed than one would sure like.

Although it may be slightly too utilitarian looking for some, I use an Ikea PS 2017 next to my adjustable bed. It has plenty of space for my lamp, clock, book, phone, coffee and kleenex, and is very light to pull forward as the head of my bed rises. I ensure that the lamp and clock cords are long enough so things aren't pulled off as the table moves forward.

I like all the rolling cart ideas but I have my grandmother's antique bedroom furniture, oil paintings, etc. and these don't exactly go with the design. Then where do you put them when you lay the bed back flat? I suppose I could have someone make something to match, but that seems like a lot of work. I wish someone would make an extra deep nightstand for this issue.

I have been using a secretary with a fold down lid they were also called phone tables. I have given my daughter her grandmother's Ducan Phyfe secretary but it may be to high. I love my little phone cabinet it has a place for rx. & cubbies. A drawer & a door with 2 shelves BUT it is not deep enough. Can't have everything I guess.

bar cart, or an open bookshelf with wheels added... as long as its at least 40" high. placed parallel to the bed. those handles would be a great place to hand a blanket, a basket on hooks, etc. and there are antique ones, you just have to go searching!

Where to put a lamp you can reach?

I bought a beautiful marble and brass c table to slide under my adjustable bed . It is perfect except it is too short to slide over the mattress . It would have to be 29 or 30 inches tall. Anyone know where I can buy a tall non utilitarian looking c table?

I use a round draped table. It consists of a simple 30" high raw wood cabinet open on one side with a shelf on the inside. The wood top is a 30" round with a glass top. Large space...big enough for a lamp, pictures, glass,etc. Had a round fabric cloth with trim made that drapes to the floor and has a split in open side of base for access to shelf. It's placed out from the wall and fairly easy to reach from the side of bed. It needs to be far enough away from side of bed to allow for making the bed. Budget table: I have also turned a tall plastic trash can upside down to be the base of a table. Then a round wood top and piece of glass. Top with floor length circular cover.. The plastic base moves easier than a metal trash can.

I don't know how to build it but I keep thinking of a shelf that can attach to the bed frame that would be cantilevered or balanced that as the head of the bed came up, it would be kept level. Does that make sense?

I'm using my existing night stands. I just added small low profile casters, so I can roll them forward while watching TV. One thing to consider, we have hardwood floors. I'm not sure how hard it might be with carpet. Perhaps using larger diameter casters might help on carpet.

I also find it handy to be able to roll them out of the way when I vacuum.

I’d love to see more solutions to this problem. We have our bedside lamps hooked up to Alexa so we can turn them off without climbing out of bed to get to them. However, putting my phone on the charger and grabbing my water/book are still pretty inconvenient.

With the caddy above just sitting on the bed, it seems you would still need to get out of bed (to remove it) in order to go to sleep.

I also have a king adjustable bed and looking for a solution. I am finding a couple of nightstands that have a pull out tray trying to find better versions of that. If only I were a carpenter, I’d make a fortune making various styles of nightstands to address this issue since so many people have adjustable beds now.

I know, my thoughts exactly i was looking for a nightstand (or some kind of side table) with a pull out writing surface. I think probably swingarm lamps might work for lighting. Please comment again if you find one !
