The remodeling has begun! The contractors got the living room painted, I got the kitchen painted and I am starting on the upstairs laundry room Thursday. I'll upload some pictures tomorrow when I have WiFi available. They are on my phone. My daughter left her Ipad running and it wasn't connected to WiFi and it used all my data, so I turned my mobile data off. And I deactivated my Facebook account because of all the arguing about the Orlando thing. :(

wow..sounds like a stressful time. wishing you all the best on your remodel and I know everyone will pitch in with their thoughts as you go along.
in your bedroom, I would either remove the paneling or sand and paint it a soft white.

Thanks!! Yeah, pretty stressful. I was actually thinking of painting the paneling a dark color, like dark gray or brown. I work nights, so I need the room to be dark. But maybe if I had good sun-blocking curtains, it would still be dark in there.

Hi, First get a concise plan of what you want to accomplish, then start to look at each individual phase, The paneling is it original or on Sheetrock? you Can find out by removing a outlet cover and exploring if you see Sheetrock then it was added. If you are determined and this will be dictated by your budget, you can attempt to remove a section If it was glued and nailed there will be damage to the existing rock witch will need to be skimmed and textured. If it was not glued it will pull right off and then you can deal with the rock underneath. Depending on the type of baseboard and window and door casings (trim) you could Sheetrock it with 1/4 " rock.

There are a few loose parts, so I will look tomorrow and see what is on the other side of it. It's in the basement, so it might be cinderblock or something like that on one wall and sheetrock on another. That will give me some idea, though. Thanks!!!

if your bedroom flooded up over any of the paneling, you will want to remove it. drywall areas, if water touched them will need to be cut away on the bottom sections and redrywalled there.
The light blocking draperies will definitely be good for your windows.

Hey Nancy, don't take this as an insult. It's a suggestion that may or may not apply. Only you will know if it does. And no need to answer on here. Sometimes local businesses and contractors are willing to give discounts on labour/supplies to single Moms and those in adverse circumstances.

It may also be worth checking into Habitat-For-Humanity, local home improvement grants, student architect and construction/design programs looking for practice projects and also low-interest loans from banks.

Or write into a tv design show or a magazine. Or try a Go-Fund-Me page.

You never know.

Been married almost 20 years, so that won't help! Actually, insurance is paying for a lot of it. Also, our house is paid off and we have an extensive home equity line of credit, so we are good there. It's not the cost that is stressing me out, it's picking out all the colors, furniture, accessories and décor. We were planning on remodeling anyway, just not this soon and one room at a time, not the whole downstairs! LOL!

I have hundreds of pictures saved on here and Pinterest so I have an idea of the colors, textures and designs I like. It just stresses me out because I really want it to look amazing and I want all the rooms to match. We have to decide where to place the new cabinets in the kitchen and whether or not to put the bar that was between the kitchen and dining room back or leave it open. Just so many choices to deal with.

If you find it stressful, maybe a good friend who know you well, can send you some images of rooms from HOUZZ that they think you will love. Sometimes all it takes is one photo to light you up and make you realize what you want and love!

Glad to hear funds are good :-) Have you considered hiring a design consultant? Since there are extensive things to decide, that may be a wise choice and less stressful approach.

They can visit your space and check out the current light and construction, etc. Check-out a few portfolios and see what they offer.

Even an hour or two to get the main things decided would make a huge difference. Just find someone reasonable that is willing to work with your space and budget.

Once you get the main things decided, you may find accessories and less crucial things easier. Some designers are on staff at kitchen and cabinet stores. They may even help for free if you buy their cabinets, etc.

I've thought about consulting with a professional. As you can see by my purple hair, I'm kind of a nerd so I have a lot of creative friends giving me suggestions. But I want to do what's right for ME. I've determined the colors and styles I like!! that's a start!!! I got some painting done upstairs today and that makes me feel better. I just want it to be done!! We are going to pick out furniture tomorrow so that should get my spirits up!!

Take measurements of the rooms with you and draw in the windows and doors! We get too many dilemmas where furniture is too big.

I'm an ER/med surg nurse so this is especially funny to me.

I had a crappy night last night (no one died so it's all good). Slept a few hours and painted a large wall this afternoon, so I'm feeling fine!

I'm actually a float nurse, but count lots of hours in ER and med/surg--to name, two. (I've gone pretty much everywhere except oncology/chemo.) At one point I had to float to over 22 different units. You have to be quick and versatile and remember all the phone and door-lock codes, lol.

I'm taking additional courses and challenging exams right now so I can get OR specialization and further degree credits. I'm planning to add my ER specialization later.

It's so funny about the cartoons--I usually feel like a circus acrobat, lol.

luvourhome- I work ER, Med-surg and SSB. But it feels like the psyche ward most nights!I hear ya on the codes! I was training a new nurse the other night and I told her she was gonna have to get a whole notebook just to write down all the codes we have to remember!! I just hope all your departments use the same computer system!!!!

Picked out all new furniture this morning, went though 20 years worth of storage. THAT was interesting. Now I'm painting the ceiling in our living room. I think I'd rather be working a 12 hour shift at work.
