Thank you. That sounded like a great suggestion until I looked up of blood meal was safe for dogs. It isn't. Any other ideas?

I wonder if the type of hosta makes a difference? I had rabbits nibble on some a while back that I ended up getting rid of. I now have one that is different than those, and the rabbits haven't touched it.

I have a neighbor who said he scattered hair clippings (he buzzes his own hair) around his flowers, and the rabbits started leaving them alone. He also put a few little pinwheels by his plants that move pretty constantly, so I guess it's supposed to scare the rabbits away? I don't know how effective they are, but he's put them up two years in a row, so I guess he feels like they work.

Get a pet. ;-) Our little terrier just caught a bunny in our back yard this week, as a matter of fact.

I have rabbits and hostas. I've found they leave the large hostas alone. They also don't eat my Stella d'oro lilies and ditch lilies. There is a spray you can make or buy that smells like rotten eggs. I've used it before and it works, but you have to re-apply when it wears off.

Lemmy - I have 2 dogs (chihuahuas). I prefer they don't eat the bunnies because I like them :) But I don't like them eating my flowers! I did have a foster dog (Chihuahua) who caught and ate the rabbits. He was FAST and a fierce and focused hunter. He also caught and ate a mourning dove. Never seen a Chihuahua do that before!

I have a similar problem... I've tried cayenne pepper, which works but washes off and washes into the ground and has to be re-applied. Same with the spray-on product Liquid Fence. So now I'm using Bobbex rabbit repellent. Get it from the nursery, spray on a not-so-windy day. It smells terrible...worse than terrible... but when it dries it's only detectible to the critters. And it doesn't wash off from the rain or sprinklers. You do re-apply periodically, but not so often. This is the best thing I've found so far.

I agree with gracie above, who said that they tend to leave the larger hosta alone.... HOWEVER, they will love to gnaw on the emerging pips in the spring (which makes the hosta look a little mutilated when the leaves unfurl), so next spring I'm going to be out there with my Bobbex right from the get-go!
