Recommendations for 2nd kitchen sink?

We are renovating our 1905 kitchen. Our primary sink is going to be a 36" white farmhouse sink (leaning towards Kohler's Whitehaven but I might be persuaded otherwise). We are going to have a second prep sink and I'm looking for thoughts. A smaller farmhouse sink? A top mount (the farmhouse will be undermounted)? An undermount non-farmhouse? The countertops will be soapstone and cabinets will be a light gray Shaker style. I'm not really a matchy-matchy type, so I've been thinking to do a simpler prep sink.

First of all make sure you going to use it. Most are under utilized and many clients have commented that they would have rather had the extra counter space. I had one in my house and when we remodeled I also had it removed. If they aren't large enough water tends to end up all over the counters and if the location isn't good then no one wants to use it. No need to match if you do go ahead with it but without more details I can't say for sure.

I agree with Skydell. We moved into a house 3 years ago with a second sink. We only used it to fill our water pitcher. During our remodel we added an island, eliminated the second sink and got a refrigerator with a built-in water dispenser. We don't miss the sink!

It's obviously a personal preference. I love my prep sink. It's well sited for vegetable prep, and it keeps the dirty dishes away from food.

As far as style, I would go lowkey....stainless undermount. Or perhaps porcelain on cast iron.

If you really want one, I'd keep it small and bar sized. Depending your faucets, perhaps even a hammered metal. I also think unless a major cook or caterer.....not really necessary and they eat counter space. And usually not used. Clean , load, wash, wipe as you cook and the kitchen prep and cleanup is a breeze.

I have back to back sinks in my island and love them but we cook a lot and the way my kitchen is laid out the fridge is on one side of the island and the stove on the other and we cook together so makes sense for us. I think this is a personal choice but really think about how you cook and if this is a nessessity not just something you think all kitchens need .

Thanks for your thoughts, folks. We do a LOT of cooking and quite a bit of entertaining, so the 2nd sink will be put to work. Because of the configuration to work around windows and doors, the cook zone is pretty separate from the cleaning zone. The second sink will be key to making cooking work easily (e.g., carrying a pot of cooked pasta to the sink). I'm not too worried about the amount of counter space. I welcome any thoughts on the layout. I really love the possibility of keeping the cooking zone out of traffic paths, probably one of my favorite things about this layout. One change--the island is going to have one less 24" cabinet--it was crowding the opening into the breakfast nook to have the island that long.
