I have this terra cotta colored granite called rosa bordeaux. The cabinets are pickled and I would like to update them without replacing the granite. Should I have them painted? If so, what color and what color for the tiny amount of wall space above the cabinets. I was thinking a gray or off white for the cabinets.

    Can you show us pictures?

Sorry, my first photo didn't show up. Here are some others. We have done some updates and gotten rid of the fake plants from the previous owner. The ovens are now stainless.

What I would like to see is a very soft white to light cream painted cabinet. To my eye a gray would fight with the granite. I looked to see what others have done with your granite...I seriously had a very hard time find anything! Have you gone to Sherwin-Williams Color Snap? I have not mastered the app yet but it does kinda give you an idea of what it would look like in different colors.

If I paint the cabinets a light cream, what should I do with the pantry door and the trim?

If you go with a white/cream, I would paint the door and trim to match the cabinets.

If you like dark cabinets (sometimes I do, sometimes I don't) I think a dark chocolate could work. That would still work with a cream on the trim.

The counters remind me of copper, so I searched for copper kitchens in houzz photos. I found that I really didn't like it paired with cream cabinets -- I preferred a whiter white. I like color in a kitchen, also, and saw some blues, greens and pale yellows that I liked paired with the copper and white.

cobalt blue pantry door.....avoid the painting of cabinets ...paint the walls a white-maybe bluish or very cool undertones. The wall color you have is throwing everything off. If you want some change to cabinets get some glass doors for the uppers....if you can't match for new doors then just paint the uppers white and that way new glass doors would be easy. Eliminating the current wall color will make everything look different even if you do nothing else.

Although I don't particularly like the "pickled" cabinets, I think herbflavor may be onto something - just painting the walls. I'd like to see them a deep color however. For reference, though, here is a picture of the kitchen in my previous home - the cabinets were dark (espresso), the walls green, the backsplash tumbled marble with glass inserts in coppery colors, and the counters crema Bordeaux.

I think I'd rather a medium-toned wood stain than white or cream paint with that granite.

It's very tough to stain wood that has already been stained, even if you want to go darker. And no blue. You have a warm stone, save yourself the heartache and keep to warmer hues.

I would paint if you're up to it. It means cleaning, sanding, priming, painting at least two coats, sanding between coats....and finishing, usually with a matte polyurethane.

Before you do any of that, google images of kitchens with your granite and look for images you actually like. It may be that with that stone, you're not going to find a look that you like well enough to go to all that effort.

Is this image worth it to you? Because if I did all that work and my kitchen ended up looking like the one below, I'd be crushed. Red stone and white or cream cabinets is not that attractive.

Are your cabinets maple? Would you consider stripping, sanding, then just sealing them with matte poly? Something a little like this?

I know I'm a backsplash person, but have you considered removing the slab backsplash and replacing it with...well...anything else? If you want to corral the visual impact of the stone, take it off of the (vertical) walls. Good luck!

That cabinet color you have right now looks pink with the white door and reddish granite. I can see why you want to change it. Usually, you paint the cabinets and trim the same color, otherwise it will look off. I believe a dark cream or beige is your best bet.

Thanks for your answers. I like the granite but it's hard to find photos. I don't like bright white paint with it because it's too stark. The cabinets have oak doors and the boxes aren't great. I've thought about refacing them and replacing the doors but don't know if I'd want dark or light stain. I played around with Sherwin Williams Colorsnap and gray looked pretty good. So confused.

My mom has your exact granite. It is flat out gorgeous! It is rare to find that deeper red color in the Bordeaux granites anymore. I only see the much lighter crema Bordeaux anymore at the granite yards.

I don't have a good picture of her kitchen. She has a darker stained cabinet. I think it was called Java if I remember correctly. It looks something like this.

This is the only picture I have, and it truely doesn't capture AT ALL the rich red tones of the granite. I hesitate to even post it. In real life, it looks more like your photos.

Her floor is a lighter wood. I remember it was hard to find the right undertones when she was picking out the flooring. I wish I had a better photo to show you. It is over ten years old, but I still think her kitchen is so pretty!

You might try searching for kitchens with terra cotta tile if you're having trouble finding kitchens with your stone. Terra cotta is very similar in color to your stone, and those kitchens might give you some other ideas of good color pairings.

For example, I'm seeing several with cabinets that are -- I'm not even sure what you'd call this color. Stone?

Sharon -- Joe posted his kitchen on another thread, and this reminded me of your post. I think the counters are similar (bronze-y), and this might help with your idea of tossing greys into the palette.

Jillius is right, and matt terracotta tile is coming to the fore in fashion next year.

OK, now we're talking! Those kitchens are gorgeous! I love the java cabinets and the last one is beautiful. Thanks so much for the input. Great idea to Google terra cotta tile.
