What does your dad like? If he's only mildly interested in the decor you could give him two or three choices in order to involve him in creating his new home.

Perhaps if you develop a theme, or keywords together with him it would help in making decisions and creating a cohesive design. One thought is to think more "naval" than "seaside" as that tends to be more masculine.

I like the idea of a sisal or seagrass rug, but suggest it out of a synthetic fiber indoor/outdoor rug that won't stain and can be cleaned.

For color matching take the throw pillow cover along when shopping. Personally I would look for warmer neutrals (beige/tan) and match the green and deeper blue hues from the upholstery. These will hold their own with the strong orange hue of the flooring.

For contrast in patterns, using solids and stripes for throw pillows on the sofa and for other fabrics in the space will dilute the strength of the floral pattern.

Jacobean prints are not used a lot lately, but back in the day, it was a staple of good design. Jacobean furniture it still a winner, IMO.

Here is my nod to Jacobean style...Sweet Elle custom made this chair for me...in my fabric. I got two and they are soooo comfortable. Sweet Elle shipped them across country and they arrived in perfect shape.

I'd minimize the coral color and work with blues and neutrals to make it more "beachy" I like the idea of texture in a rug, seagrass or sisal may not be the most foot-friendly and they're not stain resistant.

Here are a couple of fabrics that would work. The top one is very complimentary to the Jacobean fabric, picking up both its blues on my computer. The stripe would be for a more casual compliment. Both are from Arkfabric.com, a pro here at Houzz. A large buffalo check for drapes and/or dining chair seats would look great. At the beach I would tend to rely on the background color and the blues for both paint and other upholstered pieces and accents. Sisal would be my choice of rug.

Francine: I know exactly how you are feeling about your Dad. I moved my Mom into assisted living many years ago and brought her furniture, family pics, and rugs with her. Furnished her place just like her previous home. When she saw it, her face lit up. Now she wasn't afraid of her new surroundings anymore. :-). Making your Dad feel at home is way more important than a stylish interior. As others have noted, stay with neutrals and blues. Try to stay away from "puffy" recliners and get a smaller scale version. And there is no substitute for a recliner in the opinion of us older folks. A nice blue stripe, check or solid would fit the bill.

White slipcover will go with a coastal vibe and you can decorate any way you'd like around it.

Lighter colors might be fine, but it is for a man, and the wood flooring has plenty of color too.

This is 40% cotton / and jute. Oh does he have any more furniture to consider? Does he say 'hey I like blue / a blue lamp / art for instance -- then a dull rug?

Maybe he likes cherry woods / cinnamon / not saying all should be warm.

Would dove gray be nice with a bit rustic table?

I'm guessing the couch holds memories of your mother that he wants to keep. I've always tried to minimize the ugliest thing in a room that is too expensive to change by working with it as much as possible. pull colors from it, there are many in it. what does he like? beachy blues or denim? I think it best to offer him choices (but things you have first found that will work, whichever he picks) he will feel more at home if he has a part in it. I know its not something most older men seem to care much about but they do still have likes and dislikes. if you have found things first it limits what he has to decide on and you know it will look good. with that much print I'd go more for solid colors. move the matching couch pillows to other chairs in the room and replace them with ones that coordinate and add a throw. don't know how old or mobile he is but he needs a chair that is comfortable and easy for him to get in and out of. my mom has problems sitting on most of her furniture and uses a chair that to me doesn't look comfortable but she can use it with her bad knees. good luck

the couch is fine. but now that you have the floral print, you go forward with solids or two color neutrals. and yes swap out the matching pillows which is true no matter what couch you buy.

It is what it is and your dad deserves what will make him happy and comfortable - within reason. Rather than trying to make it something it isn't play it for what it is.

Go with a huge chesterfield mid brown leather recliner.

He will live in that chair and feel like a king. Get a great floor reading light
and table for it.

Love the green chairs!!! Also the tripod lamp. Green can read very coastal with the right use. Have you thought of pairing it with a soft sea blue?

I can't say more without seeing its current home - the green was good and with wood flooring, but now idk.

What a dear daughter. I am sorry for the loss of your mom . . blessings to your dad in a new spot. Some ideas about how to do a whole house palette from this sofa that would be fun and cheerful for him . . but also suit him taste wise . .

I'd stick with all shades of straight denim / faded denim/ sky blue and cream/buff tones besides this ... maybe use some red in a very simple way across the room . . one piece of "Summer" art like a vintage coca cola metal sign . .

but let this sofa be the primary place that red really appears in the living and dining spaces

look for grain sack stripes in buff and blues, (correction - some of the expanded gingham plaids in large scale on a wing chair . . if the colors are right .. why not?) .. paint some rundown piece of furniture a weathered chalk paint or milk paint, faded denim, rubbed back wood edges blue ..maybe natural linen textural drapery with just a simple red grograin trim . .one piece of art with red, one touch of red elsewhere .. everything else . .rattan, blue, fabrics that blend buff and blue .. then the sofa will star easily . .but the space will feel fresh and beachy . .

do some red white and blue cocktail napkins, grab a few 4th of july holiday things that would fit in . .

maybe paint the powder / guest bath room a cheerful red with everything else in there white or dark wood? like a punctuation mark? white board and batten or beadboard to 6' with orb hooks evenly spaced along the top trim . . red above that in a full size bathroom . . white towels. . tile, white waffle curtain .. dark framed mirror . . ..

for the master bedroom . .why not do a pale blue ceiling ivory walls, cream / linen bedding and chairs .. . . add a comfy chocolate leather armchair / small recliner or ottoman so he sort of has a retreat that is all his . . all neutrals and super textural except the ceiling . . some dark woods with polyshades on what you have to make it "new" ..

well i do have the tick sacking stripe i think.

someone else will have to decide, really do not get them in this application?

Francine, you are such a good daughter and you are giving your father some of the best gifts, your time, attention, and a lovely new home. My condolences on the loss of your mother. I recently lost mine and my father gains great comfort in living among the things that my mother lovingly picked. I love decorenthusiast's ideas of using creams, soft blue, and a few touches of red. Take a look at Country Curtains' website for some great examples of how to mix floral and stripes. They also have nice check options. I'd incorporate light-colored baskets and seagrass items into the theme. If you have a Marshalls/HomeGoods near you, they have a lot of inexpensive items made from these materials, including furniture.

I wouldn't buy any furnishings with blue in them until I've held a colour swatch of the fabric against your dad's lovely sofa first! A lot of the photos added here show furniture upholstered with very different blue hues.

I love Jacobean patterns. IKEA has furniture with a blue that looks similar to your dad's sofa, curtains and footstools as well.

I would head towards a more masculine room vs trying to be beachy..which can come across as more feminine and soft. A sisal rug, heavier furniture like a trunk as a coffee table/distressed wood - examples of components below and just a cream recliner. I don't think the color of the pillows will make a big difference to the room (just go with solids in creams/ blue/mocha in a linen) - I would be considering the room as a whole when making purchases/changes, so you have a clearer direction.

Great examples! I would describe his taste as quirky; he has several items that he really likes that I'm going to frame and hang on the walls. My mom always decorated in a very feminine style - his pictures of tractors and chile peppers were relegated to the basement and the garage, but now they are going to be front and center!

Maybe you could surprise him with a collage of family pictures.

Have you thought about buying a solid color sofa cover or a new sofa all together?

The blue sisal rug ties in the couch, burlap tanish accent chairs under 200 each@target give more natical look,I would put sofa pillows on chairs and the tan on the couch,hope it helps,Then you can change accents with bolder natucial choices like the coral lamp or coral bowl with roap balls.
