It works!!! :) (New (old) sewing machine)

I posted some pictures of my new sewing desk on here a week or so ago. It did not have the plug so I ordered one. I went home on my lunch break cos I had another package coming in (I couldn't wait! lol) and my plug came in too. I ran upstairs and plugged in the machine, flipped the switch and the light came on. I pushed the pedal and heard noise but nothing really happened. I turned the wheel manually then pushed the pedal and it started up! :) I'm sure it just needed some help cos it hasn't been used in a while. Now I just need to figure out how to use it haha :D

Also do they sell I guess more modern light bulbs for these that don't heat up to 1000 degrees? I didn't have it on very long and it got quite hot.

The 201-2 doesn't have a belt. It is direct drive. (That's one of the things that makes it so unique.) However, it probably needs cleaning and oiling. Chances are it sat a long time. Mine really needs a good cleaning. That's what I'm going to do over the fourth. It's an antique machine, but the principals are the same. If yo don't have the manual, you can download it from Singer here: http://www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals.

The manual will tell you all the oiling points.

I plugged mine in on Sunday and it just humms! It runs so smoothly that you can barely hear it. They say it's the Rolls Royce of old Singer machines and I believe it. I'm really excited to have this machine!

I have one of those, too. Those bulbs will really burn you. I just use a task lamp pointed at that area and leave the machine bulb off.

If I remember right, there is a little oil port on the motor of this machine and it also might need a new belt, if you had to give it a little boost to get it to moving...

Check a manual to see where oil goes and where grease (a thick lubricant) goes. There is a difference. For example, you generally put the grease on gears and oil on other moving parts. I think the motor gets grease but I would check a manual or a repair person to see if it really needs that. If you don't have a manual for this particular model of machine, check online for a manual for a similar model. Is this a Singer 201? Nice machine. Lubrication can make a huge difference in how it runs.

After I plugged it in and got it going I thought man this machine seems like it would be easier to use. I don't know it just seemed to run so smoothly and gently. The machines today seem aggressive in comparison. If that makes sense :D
