The shape and form is great. How about adding a mix of materials; concrete or pavers, pea gravel, grass, plants and even some wood decking - all maintaining the geometric feel? Consider some vertical elements too, like a fence, shade screen or arbor. Here's some ideas.

Different heights and groupings of ornamental grasses, lighting , concrete around the perimeter to walk around to clean , and a seating area pad on the end with the steps. I would be thinking about some type of barrier to keep the leaves from the wooded area blowing into the pool.
