I think you have pretty good excuse for getting behind on the weeding Dutch. That was one of the few things I could do while recouping from my surgery. After the plants get 8+ leaves and are a couple feet tall, it is nearly impossible to reach into the middle of the bed to pull a weed without breaking the onion leaves. At least that is the case in my raised onion bed where I have 5 rows of 24 plants in a 4x8 bed.

I try to do a pretty good job of keeping my onions weeded thru mid May and then I figure the plants have pretty much finished growing and all they have to do is transfer the energy from the leaves to the bulb. As long as they get adequate water for the first couple weeks of bulbing they seem to not be bothered by any weeds, Hickory, or Oak trees growing beside them.

LOL I am more or less caught up. I found out another lesson the hard way, the earlier bulbing onions do not compete with moderate weeds as well as the later ones do. My Highlander plants are probably not going to be all that much bigger than onion sets, and they are going down already, while there will still be some decent sized Copra and Red Zeppelin, all of which are looking nice and erect and some very well filled out.
