Budget for project about 40,000,total gut job including new ceiling,insulation,walls,electric,flooring,cabinets,and a new window,we kept the windows in family room and the dishwasher.This kitchen is partly contained inside the original part of the house and partly in an addition from the eighties.We had to keep in mind the low ceilings and the contours of the exterior of the original structure of the house.We had no upper cabinets originally but needed to add some for desperately needed storage,therefore the original window over the sink needed to be made smaller to accomodate them,and the window and sink could go only as far as the exterior wall of the house that abuts the sink wall.The stove position also had to keep in mind how the exhaust would vent up and out to the exterior.We put in a pantry,borrowing some space from a closet in the adjoining dining room.We stuck to standard measurement cupboards,no custom cabinets.We splurged on the blue star stove and the gas fireplace in the family room.I love the look of marble but knew it would not work for us,we love red wine too much.We chose Martha Stewart "sea salt' corian instead for a similar look but better function for us.We love the Kraftmaid cabinetry with storage drawers and soft close hinges,love the restoration hardware cabinet handles,and are so happy with a sink wide enough to wash cookie sheets and deep enough to hide dirty dishes and pans.We now have more counter space both in area and function,we were able to move several appliances off the counters onto shelves.Having one type of flooring in both spaces make the space seem bigger and more cohesive.We are very happy with our new space.We designed the space ourselves but were much inspired by the talents of the designer Rebecca Zavelof as featured in houzz.
