Sherwin Williams Modern Gray - Advice?

last modified: 10 years ago

Thinking about using Sherwin Williams Modern Gray on a significant portion of the interior of my house. What I'm wondering is if anyone has any strong feelings about this color for someone that doesn't plan on repainting for a long time. Love it? Hate it?

I'd love to see any photos of the paint in use. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find examples online. Any search for "modern gray" turns up countless photos of gray paint where the phrase "modern gray" is used on the page. Argh.

I don't want to get something I'm going to love at first and then get sick of. And to be clear, I don't think there is any color I am ever going to fall in love with. There are so many damn options that I feel like I'm just guessing at what color to use. Even where I want to use black, there are countless "shades" of black which defies all logic.

I met with a Sherwin Williams color consultant who directed me to two colors -- Grecian Ivory and Modern Gray. After painting swatches I really dislike the ivory so I'm only considering Modern Gray.

Prior to meeting the consultant I painted about 15 swatches and I didn't love any of them. I disliked many but I couldn't decide on any of the ones I deemed acceptable. And I can't keep on buying countless samples in hopes of having an "ah ha!" moment. The more I look the more confused and helpless I feel so I got the consultant who was helpful and is essentially free because the $45 fee includes a $50 gift card and a 2-for-1 sample coupon.

So I'm wondering what people think about this color and hoping I could see examples of entire walls/rooms painted in this color to give me a better visual.

I painted virtually the entirety of my old house a similar color SW 7023 Requisite Gray. I loved it, but I only lived with it about 6 months. It had been a cooler, truer gray. I had a decorator come in before we put the house up for sale and it was her suggestion to paint over the gray with a greige.

There are a number of similar colors and I guess what color is on your floor and the kind of woodwork you have would determine the exact shade that's right for you.

I thought it made an elegant backdrop. Nice with the greens of outdoors. Not blue, or purple. My spouse however thought it looked dull. So in the new house we have cooler truer shades again.

My old house was contemporary and a split, but fairly middle of the road. I thought the "greige" classed it up a bit. I will see if I can find the photos.

    Good luck.

I used Zircon Gray for the main living areas. I also used Repose Gray in the bedrooms and Mindful Gray in the office.

So far I'm happy with my choices.

Update: I ended up painting Agreeable Gray in the majority of the house, Repose gray in two bedrooms and Light French Gray (a true light gray) in master bath and bedroom. I used Alabaster white for the trim throughout and I love my choices!

I used Alabaster in a bathroom and guest bedroom. IIRC my trim is super white.

uscpsycho--we just had the entire interior of our historic 1905 remodel painted Modern Gray and I love it! There is a LOT of trim--chunky moldings and baseboards and window casings. We painted all of that SW Alabaster and love it too. It is a creamy white without yellow undertones. I will try to find pics to upload for you to see. Also--rughdesign.com is a blog devoted entirely to Sherwin Williams colors and has an extensive library of each color and what other SW paint compliments that color. I relied on her blog a lot. Best of luck! Fun but very stressful choosing paint colors.

This isn't the greatest picture quality but I wanted to share with you anyway. Walls and ceiling Modern Gray and trim Alabaster.

after looking at several SW gray swatches, we decided on the following: great room, breakfast and kitchen in modern gray and the crown molding, trim and baseboards in alabaster. the office was painted in lazy gray and our bedroom in a essential gray. also our laundry room and Spa wall in web gray. love it all!

I am as we speak painting my entire house in modern gray nd so far I love it. It is the only color I found that goes with yellow onyx stone warm woods and a ferrari red kitchen with shades of floamy blue

We have no regrets and are very happy with the modern gray/alabaster combination. We painted an attic bedroom SW window pane and love it too. Very calm and soothing color.
