Interesting... but those don't look like walking onions. Those look more like hard neck garlic scapes, with some pretty good-sized bulbils beginning to show. From what I can see of the leaves, they are also flat like garlic.

I have a "feral" garlic patch in a field adjacent to my garden, from throwing over-developed scapes there over the years. Silly me, I just assumed they would die where I threw them. ;-) Left undug, garlic will form large clumps, with very small bulbs. If you separate & plant some of those bulbils in the Fall, you may get some small garlic bulbs next year.

By the way, having noticed your screen name, it may interest you to know that there is a garlic variety named Xi'an.

Impossible for me to tell until they bloom but I grow both and my walking onions bloomed several weeks ahead of my drumsticks. Either way, I do agree the look great together!

So did my walking onions, way earlier. They are currently going yellow and going down about now; so it is definitely time to harvest the bulbils.
