You are correct about replacing a section with couplers on both ends. Whether or not you need rings depend on the type of couplers that you use. Most insert couplers ( the couplers have a barbed end that is fitted in side the pipe) require a ring, you can use a you can use a worm gear / hose clamp to keep the pipe from backing off the couplers.
